hey guys, I have a 91 cavalier 2.2l with a 5-speed and I'm having a problem with the brakes, actually just the rear brakes. I can rebuild disk brakes with my eyes closed but never wanted to mess with drums so when one of the wheel cylinders blew and I lost all my brakes I took it to a shop. that was 10 months ago, now every time I slow down I hear a very loud howling noise, but I mean really loud I can hear it over my radio. I tried adjusting them and it helps for a few min then they start howling again, its like the noise you hear when a semi-truck stops, but much louder. everything was replaced when I had the brake job so what is happening and is it easy to fix? thanks
ps. I tried the whole slamming on your brakes thing in reverse and it helps for about a min.
also I forgot to add at slow speeds the rear brakes lock up, and my parking brake is almost not working at all, thanks guys
U may need to break down and replace the the rear brake shoes and all the springs and check the parking brake cable for slack.I would recommend replace the drums if there the originals getting them machined may help if there's enuff metal left to keep them with in the specs.New rear shoes and a new spring kit should correct the problem.Spend the doe and ur problem should be gone and u will have a stout parking brake as well.Bey the way if the drums r the originals I would highly recomm replacing them the cost of machining them versus new ones would be about half the cost,I am getting ready to replace mine on my 85.
all the springs and shoes are new, as well as the drums and wheel cylinders. someone sugested the wheel cylinders might be hanging, what does that mean and would it do this?
you need to have your brakes adjusted
tried it helps for a few min. then starts squeeling and locking up again
so I brought my car into the mechanic today and he told me that the problem I'm having is the rear brake cables are rusted and not allowing the shoes to move properly. sound reasonable? and how hard are they to change?
easy to change and yes that is posible mine went bad and using my e-brake snaped them. talk about a fun ride to the parts store haha.
