Replaced '98 2.2L with a 2000 2.2L

A while back I replaced my blown motor in my 98 sunfire with a 2000 2.2L. I did the work myself in a buddies garage. Problem is the 2000 motors don't have an EGR valve so now I am getting a fault code and my car won't pass the emissions test. I know this has been talked about before here, I just can't find the postings! Do I have to replace the ECU?? If so is it possible to use a bogus VIN? How would I go about programming the flash memory - would a dealer do it even though the years of the car and the motor are different?? I hope all of my time and $$ was not a waste! Thanks for any info you can give me.

all you need is to get the 2200 sfi PCM and it should solve the problem.
