Normal garage can't figure out issue, overheating
Tuesday, June 07, 2005 11:39 AM
Hey all,

have sunfire gt 99 , 2.4 litre,
got car checked out in canadian tire and dodge, and they can't figure this out.

short period of time, car turns on normally, fan starts, electronic checked out, all looks good. But when I drove about 20 minutes , temp gauge started going up, on the highway and when I parked it, fan wasn't working .

fan direct tested works, and ac works, now my concern is what to try first as next step,
because dealership, charging arm and a leg

Temperature switch for fan bad? Can the car idle for more than 20 minutes with out overheating? I've had cars that would only overheat on the highway but were fine around town. Turned out the water pump was going bad and couldn't push enough coolant through at highway speeds.

hard to say went to dodge, started the car, 10 minutes drove 5 minutes at least idled after 10 minutes wasn't overheating. and the fan was working still and not overheating

1- Canadian tire is not a garage, it's a bunch of loosers that don't know cars.

2- Dodge is not Gm

3- What is overheating for you? 90°? 125°?

4- If the fan come on, that's not the problem

5- if the fan is working, it should not overheat and that plain normal.

6- when you go around town the engine as more heat so it's normal to be a bit higher.

7- If the fan is on and the car still overheat when you're driving, check the water pump. common thing on the 2.4. you can look for the thermostat too.

exemple, trip was 56 km one way, 3/4 of way, saw gauge go up slowly, when it parked open hood, fan wasn't working, and hear noise aka pressure, and was leaking fluids near coolent resevoir

that's enough to cause trouble. If you ahve a leak from the reservoir cap, you can overheat. Check to be sure you don't have any leak.

If the gauge diddn't go all the way up, and you "heard pressure",I would be thinking head gasket(esp. on a quad 4).
Cylinder pressure is getting into the cooling system, raising the pressure of the system and blowing it out the resevoir.
It probably only happens while driving because the motor is working(more pressure).
Try taking the cap off and running the engine at 2000 rpm and watch for bubbles.

a 2.4 is not a quad 4. I have a quad 4. The 2.3 were known for the head gasket but the 2.4 is alot better. Btw, it wasn't because of the gasket but because of the driver that they had so many problems cause I never had one with mine except for my stupidity sometimes.

By resevoir are you talking about the actuall radiator or the overflow container?

Try replacing your radiator cap. It could be bad and your cooling system isn't working properly because it isn't pressurized. I would also run the car with the cap off and look for bubbles as was stated above.

Are you getting any of the other signs of a bad head gasket?
White smoke and sweet smelling exhaust.

overflow container , i'll try the bubble technique,,

and no, no other signs of engines smoke
