I got my new Flowmaster 40 series muffler installed today. It sounds good, but it's giving off this strong smell. I'm pretty sure its not exhaust. After I turn the car off and get out I can really smell it, especially when I bent down by the back wheel near the muffler. It's like the heat coming off the muffler just smells rotten. Anyone know if this is a work-in period for the muffler and it should go away, or a cause for concern at all?? It's not a pleasant smell. Thanks a lot!

How do the 40 series sound? Too overbearing? I'm looking to get them for a dual exhaust set up when I get the 3800 in.
its normal. something to do with the oils on the inside of the muffler. happened to be when i put a muffler on the 96Z24 i had and on the 02 Eco i got now. dont sweat it, give it bout a week or 2 and it will go away.

could be catalic converter giving the rotten egg smell effect
Post a sound clip. I want to hear it.

It's a perfect sound. Deep rumble at start up and idle. Muffler is very calm at low throttle when you're just cruising, which I like so you can still talk with a friend normally or listen to music normally. When you get it on the gas you hear a good sound too. I used to have a cavalier with multiple overbearing mufflers, this is not one of them. It's deeper. I love having the 5 speed with this muffler. You will love it on the 3800
The funny thing is you will read online that the 40 series is very loud, it's not "very loud", its just right.

I would be happy to, what do I need to record the sound though?

A microphone?
A tape recorder would be fine, then bring it back to your computer and plug into the Mic jack on the back and use the Sound Recorder program. That's the easiest way.

i got my flowmaster 40 installed 3 days ago aswell, and get the same smell..sorta smells like the smell from the welder...should go away though...i love the sound aswell!!
Exactly.
The smell is usually the baffling in the muffler heating up and forming to it's best location. I had that smell on the Ranger when i put my dynomax catback on. Plus it's the oils from your hands burning off. Give it a few days and it'll go away.... If it's not gone in a few days. Check it over and make sure it's not rubbing against anything and melting things.
I had a rubbing issue on a Durango i was working on for a friend. Put a new Magnaflow exhaust on it with a much larger than stock tip and it ended up melting part of the muffler away. We figured... If if wants to melt the proper exhaust cut out. Let it. As long as it doesnt melt the whole muffler away.
Check the back of your bumper too. That might be melting a bit depending on the placement of the muffler.
