I just finished driving a full tank of gas, my car (2001 Cavalier Z24, 2.4 Auto) went for
395.2km (245.7miles) on that tank to the low fuel light (1.5 Gal left). With this range i'm at 19.20mpg (245.7/(14.3-1.5)).
I don't think that is right for a 4 cylinder Cavalier.
I have done these things to help the gas mileage
-New air filter
-Keep RPMS below 3000
-50k miles (about that) 89700km on the car
-proper tire pressure 30psi
-minimal A/c usuage
-5W30 changed in January
In the winter i did the 360km for the entire tank that was before the air filter. So this is somewhat of an improvement.
Now i'm thinking on how to improve this...
-change spark plugs?
-change fuel filter? (will do soon for sure)
-fuel addiditive?
-clean the throttle body?
-oil change?
-reset the computer (disconnect the battery to clear the memory)?
-change oil/air seperator? (not sure if this affects fuel economy)
-different intake other than stock?
I think right now my goal is to try to get around 500-550km (21-30 MPG) out a tank, not sure its possible.
on my auto z 01, i get 220-250 miles per tank city, and 350-400 miles highway. so you're not too far off

My 97 2.2 liter gets 23 mpg with my driving. If you're not a total grandma then 19mpg isn't that far off.
Zac
My 04 2.2, just drove 1200 miles this week on a short trip. Anyways got about 33mpg highway, with A/C on in second position.
In city I get like 27-29, mine is really great.
- 2004 Cavalier - 124k, owned since new
i'm at 254 right now and sitting between 3/8's and 1/2
i love my car
Viper your cavalier probably needs something just like mine. I'm sure we can get more miles per gallon. I'm gonna change my fuel filter and buy some injector cleaner, hopefully that'll make things better.
Does anyone know if the oil/air seperator affects fuel economy?
And maybe i'll disconnect the bong on the stock air box to make the engine breath easier (or i'll get an intake). BTW the filter is an AC Delco air filter. I'm going to check the spark plugs probably too.
I usually drive in the city but i reach 50mph-60mph on the open roads (sometimes
)
I have a 97 2.2 5spd Cav. I drive about 75 miles a day to and from work so its mostly hwy. miles. I get about 30.5 gpm and refuel about 15 gallons driving about 480 miles. I got a sensor code for the EGR, cleaned that out with carb cleaner. Then i got to drive like 560, same 15.0 gallons to refuel and get an average of 37.5 gpm. I dont drive with the a/c all the time and my speed is around 65-70mph, hit 80mph to pass cars along the way. I know that 30.5 hwy is good but not sure of 37.5 after cleaning the EGR. I did change the cluster unit for one with a tach and trip odometer and it does mark the miles on the money with that driven. I am happy with it.
right now i'm at 270 miles and only at one notch under half of a tank. my car is great on gas, and i never idle it and always shift at 2000 to 2500 rpm depending on hills and things like that. I have no complaints.
does the 2.4 have an EGR?
Yes but only up to 98 I think. Yours wont have one.

ok cool, does the air/oil seperator affect fuel economy?
23-26mpg here w/a 98 Cav 2.2L Auto.
26-28mpg with a 04 ecotec.
And I thought that mine was bad!
New Picture comming this summer.
you think 28 mpg is bad? wtf are you smoking.

2001 Cavalier Z24
i just got 450 miles while using the a/c. they were mostly highway miles.
Peace Out!!!
02 2200 anywhere from 285-325 combined city/hwy just dependes on how often I get stuck in trafffic, oh and I have a serious case of "lead foot" too
I have a '99 Sunfire SE with 220,000km on the 2.2L motor, and 3 spd. slushbox. I get more than 600 KM's on the highway on regular 87 octane gas if i'm driving like a normal, sane motorist. Depending on how bad i beat on the thing i'll get between 600 and 400kms to a 50L tank, but thats when I'm just stomping the gas in city driving, or cruising 140 on the back roads type of deal. oh ya, the thing is bone stock. Only thing i can think of is that its had its oil changed EVERY 5000 km's, gets a new fuel and air filter every 50,000km. new plugs and wires every 70,000 so the motor is strong. But you gotta realize that I've driven it from the time i got my licence 3 years ago until now, so it has by no means been driven lightly. I've ruined the front tires about every 80,000 kms.
That cop took the whole thing way out of context. I mean, I was only going 145 Km/h in that
80 km/h zone because I was drunk and I wanted to get off the roads.
I get 250 miles per tank. I do a mix between highway and city driving.
02 ecotec auto
Well i bought a new NAPA (WIX) fuel filter so hopefully that'll help. I'm also going to try to disconnect the bong at the air box to allow the engine to breathe easier. I'm gonna pour some injector cleaner into the tank too.
The 2.4 makes me mad I should have bought a 2200!!! All of u with 2.2's or 2200 getting better gas mileage than me... bah.
'00 LS w/2.4 and auto tranny, I get 25 in town 32 hiway and 29 average. Something is wrong with your car I think. Do you have the itty biity donut tires? My engine runs 2250rpm at 60mph. How about yours?
I have the sport tires Good Year RSAs with 16'' stock rims. See thats what I mean there is something worng with my car. My engine runs at about the same rpms at 60mph. You got an mods on ur Cavalier old wolf?
No, mine is stock.
Maybe the computer reset is a good idea.
I have run injector cleaner through it now and then.
I use 10-30, just switched over to 5-30 last week.
I think the emissions system (computer, sensors, etc) are warrantied for 50k or maybe 100k. Check your manual.
Maybe it is time for the shop.
It wouldn't hurt to check the plugs.
Is the tailpipe real sooty? It shouldn't have much up there.
On my 2002 2.2L, I got a whopping 720km in one tank (all highway) while driving from Toronto to Virginia. Mind you, I was driving about 55mph and my car doesn't have A/C
Normally I get about 550km highway/city driving, gotta love it
