Hi all, Mr goodwrench,
Im having knocking or tocking noises in my steering when i steer while stopped.
Like 3 knocks in one full turn of the steering wheel in both directions.
My mechanic said thats its my R & P but i disagree cause the car have only 60.000 miles on it.
One guy who is also a mechanic and knows well the jbody cars told me that the shaft of the steering wheel is not well lubed from the factory at GM and that's the problem. He told me to buy a special lub from GM and to lub the shaft from 2 parts, and the gm put out a service bulleting regarding this issue.
Who is right here?
Roby
actually imnot sure im having the same problem in my 99 cavy and it has 132,000 miles on it. so im not sure. hopefully someone will find out so that we can get are problems fixed.
im thinking of taking it to the shop friday to see what the dealio is... if no one ever post anyhting back here

i know that my 98 cav had a recall for some thing in the steering. so you might want to check up on that
Well i have a 2001 model and i didnt receive any recall regarding the steering. I got one only regarding the ignition which i went and they replaced it.
Could be a strut mount bearing seized up, have someone turn the steering wheel while u watch the springs for binding.
It is the intermediate steering shaft- GM sells a new one or sells a grease kit to repair it to stop the knocking noise.
zsquee24 thats what i have told exactly. I guess i'll try the lub to see if its gonna cure it.
The "lube" fix keeps it quiet for a week or two, but it comes back. Something I have just learned to live with for the past 3 years. They "fixed" it 3 or 4 times, but it always comes back.
ill just take mine to the shop and have them replace damn thing if i have too.

I lubed my steering shaft 3 years ago and it still is fine.
It is not that hard to replace it. You have to pull the shaft out of the car to grease it anyhow.
Directions for pulling intermediate steering shaft:
1. remove drivers front wheel
2. look through fenderwell to engine bay and find top of steering rack with rubber boot over it
3. pull rubber boot up and remove 10 or 11mm bolt from shaft mount
4. under the dash, locate bottom of steering column where rubber boot covers shaft.
5. remove steel ring inside boot at top of boot and throw away
6. pull rubber boot toward firewall and remove 10-11 mm bolt that attaches shaft to column.
7.pull shaft through the firewall into interior.
For installation, go backwards from 7 to 1.
Hope this helps those who need to do this.

Damn it looks complicated...I prefer getting the car to my mechanic. Im gonna print your directions ZSQUEE24 and give it to him. I dont think he ever did that job before.
thanks
yeah I learned to live with the knocking. I've tried fixing it TWICE. no go. it's not that bad from the outside. sounds worse in the cabin

The service bullitin you guys are talking about is #04-02-35-004C. One important thing you left out is that the steering wheel has to be locked before disconnecting the steering shaft. This is mentioned on the service bullitin itself. If you don't lock the wheel, it might damage the SIR coil Assembly if it is damaged. Just a heads up on that.
where can i find info on this #04-02-35-004C

Clunk Noise from Front of Vehicle During Turning Maneuver/Steering Wheel Rotation (Replace Intermediate Steering Shaft) #04-02-35-004C - (Dec 2, 2004)
Clunk Noise from Front of Vehicle During Turning Maneuver/Steering Wheel Rotation (Replace Intermediate Steering Shaft)
2001-2004 Buick Regal
2001-2003 Cadillac Seville -- with RPO JL4 (Control Active Brake)
1997-2004 Chevrolet Cavalier
2000-2004 Chevrolet Impala, Monte Carlo
1997-2004 Pontiac Sunfire
2000-2004 Pontiac Bonneville
2004 Pontiac Grand Prix
This bulletin is being revised to update Grand Prix model year information, and include repair information to prevent damage to the SIR coil. Please discard Corporate Bulletin Number 04-02-35-004B (Section 02 - Steering).
Condition
Some customers may comment on a clunk type noise coming from the front of the vehicle during a turning maneuver. This condition may also be felt through the steering wheel when the vehicle is stationary and the wheel is rotated from steering stop to steering stop.
Cause
The clunk noise may be caused by a stick-slip condition in the intermediate shaft. An interaction with the steering system creates a vibration that travels up the steering column to the steering wheel.
Correction
DO THIS
Replace Intermediate Steering Shaft
Notice: : The wheels of the vehicle must be straight ahead and the steering column in the LOCK position before disconnecting the steering column or intermediate shaft from the steering gear. Failure to do so will cause the SIR coil assembly to become uncentered, which may cause damage to the coil assembly. Insert J 42640 (steering column anti-rotation pin) into the steering column access hole in order to lock the steering column.
A new intermediate steering shaft has been released to address the clunk noise.
Important: Engineering changes have been made to the Service Parts available through SPO. The Service Parts for the vehicles listed in this bulletin will no longer require lubrication of the Intermediate Steering Shaft.
Install a new shaft following the Intermediate Steering Shaft Replacement procedure in the Steering Wheel and Column sub-section of the Service Manual.

yeah thanks for that post. i get a small noise when decelerating, but the loudest noise and heaviest bump comes when turning right. doesnt happen when still or at low speed, but if i take a sharp right turn at around 15-25 mph i get a loud and heavy clunk...this may be my problem. will be taking it to the dealer (with a printout of the above post) tomorrow.

I've been getting some clunking when turning and going slow. but also cicks a little bit if im stopped. not sure if its my cv joint or steering shaft. or both. hard to tell. stupid exaust cant hear too good with it.
Mine is also clunking when turning, but I also notice the steering wheel stiffens up when turning about half way, then if you keep turning it goes back to normal. Feels like a resistance point... Anyone experience this?
