did you use a torque wrench? clean off the old gasket? use a new one?

Doubt its related, but since i replaced mine, my car at idle sounds kinda odd, like something's up with the belt, does it hurt to have the timing belt too tight? It runs fine, if not better than before, Before, the timing belt was so loose that i could pull it off without loosening the waterpump. My only other thought is that the crank pulley is crooked, but the belt seems fine despite that. The sound is sort of a ploppy noise too.

Same thing here! I replaced my water pump at 118,XXX miles b/c I got REALLY bad leaking from it. I just put the new one in, and it's still doing it! Worse than before! I was able to get it home on some coolant and water, but, when I got it home, I looked under the car and saw coolant leaking EVERYWHERE! It was a pain in the butt to remove get to and remove the original one (damn pulley bolts) that I really don't want to go and have to do it again. I replaced the seal, and torqued everything down, but like I said... Still leaking! I know it's around the pump b/c I can see where it was on the pump and it's SOAKED around it. I'm about to give up and take it to a shop, but I don't have the extra money to pay someone to do it. Oh, and everyone saying it took about 20 mins to replace it... SCREW YOU! (lol) I was there for a while just removing bolts and all. then trying to get the belt back on was a pain in the @$$ seeing as it was only me doing it and I have short arms, and can't push on the tensioner and reach the front of the belt to pull it over the pulley. Oh well... If someone lives in the New River Valley in VA and wants to play with my water pump, I'll buy them beer while they do the project! LOL

id take that beer but im 400 miles from you.
before you torked it down did apply some RTV gasket sealer to the sealing surface?
any possibility that you bought a reverse flow pump? just something about v8s-dont know if they apply to 4/6 cyls.
did you use new bolts with the new pump or did you use the old bolts?
the old bolts can be slightly warped, and can distort the gasket, buy ARP.
what about the gasket itself, was it a quality gasket? Fel-pro works good.
did you align the pulleys true?
how about the gasket sealing surface, was there excess flash? pitting or corrosion?
good to grind those smooth.
deck surface? was it within tolerances? some are sold 'new' with slight deck warpage.
lots of stuff to go over, id suggst making a checklist and going by it-trust me it helps.

you're from richmond? no kidding, i just moved from there!
i lived on 1st ave. northside highland park, how 'bout you?

On the 2.0, the bolts hold the waterpump on via washers, the waterpump rotates to put tension on the timing belt (wierd design, I know), no leaks my end, just the odd idle sound. Anyone with the 2.0 know what i mean?

It may be the sealer... I used the gasket that came with the new pump, and the old bolts... Everything looked fine before the final tightening.. I didn't have very much sealer, so I may not have used enough to use it sparingly... I'm going out tomorrow and getting more and a new seal to try again. Thanks for the ideas for the brainstorm!

yeah the seal is touchy, it has to be perfect or it wont seal.
use blue RTV silicone sealer applied in a 1/8" to 1/4" continuous bead (applied around all water passages and bolt holes),
a fel-pro or mr. gasket gasket (the stock ones are cheap, and rarely seal when compressed), finally ARP bolts, grade 8 in whatever finish you want (straight and true-also looks professional after its done).

no problem on the brainstorm, i love this website--nice long answers!!!!

i miss living near an auto parts store, they're just starting to build one down here.
in richmond there was advance @ west broad past libbie, and a slew of stores on chamberlayne ave.
