Power steering leak

Hey all, I have a 98 Cavalier 2.4 with 190,000 miles on it and its leaking power steering fluid. It looks like its coming from the reservoir. Can I take off reservoir and replace gasket, if there is one on there, or do I have to replace the reservoir. Also how do you take reservoir off? is it hard to remove?

Is it leaking out the fill cap or one of the hoses?

I had a leak in my 97 sunfire. WHen it all emptied out, I poured somthing called "Power Steering Stop Leak" in, like half the bottle. Then I filled the rest of the tank with fluid. It solved the problem. I got the stop leak at Autozone.

It looks like its leaking from the seam on the reservoir

You might be able to get the reservoir from the dealer or a junk yard.

I thought my power steering was leaking from my 96 sunfire a year ago or so. The reservoir was half full. I used a turkey baster and replaced the old fluid with new STP power steering fluid and it hasnt needed a topup since. I guess I was lucky.

dont know bout changing the resovoir, but you can try some stop leak and see if that works! I tried it in my last elcamino and it worked! you can get it any auto parts store. Give it a try..you might be surpised how it slows or stops the leak.

Go to either advance auto or auto zone and buy LUCAS power steering stop leak! It is guaranteed to stop all seal leaks or your MONEY BACK.I for one used this on my 97 international tractor trlr and it stopped the power steering gear box seal leaking within 50 miles of driving!I spent like 7bux for it and like it never leaked again.U may need to drain out some fluid and add as the bottle directions advise,I used the whole bottle. But again my trk has a lot of ps fluid.Great product that lives up its promise.

Your lucky if you just have a simple O Ring that needs replaced. Just replace it and be done with it.

Sorry to resurrect an old thread, but I also have a power steering leak.

its on my 2000 cavy, 2.2L. It looks like one of the lines the comes from the reservoir, and where it changes over from the black 'flex' tubing to the smaller diameter steel tubing it looks like there is a clip or coupling there that is leaking. The problem is it looks like such a pain to get to, right above a frame rail on the bottom of the car. I can almost get to it by taking off my passenger side tire, but still not really enough room to work.

Any ideas on what it could be or what to replace or try? Or should I just let the shop deal with it? (they said ~$200 but that was without seeing the car). I can probably get a few pictures if you need to see where I'm talking about.

Thanks.

I have a power steering leak, and I want to replace the o-ring, however, the last time I tried, I could never find the perfect o-ring. Does any know the exact size of the stock o-ring? I talked to GM and they don't sell just the o-ring.

I found that there is such a thing as a "power steering pump seal kit" usually sold at parts places. It's between $10-$15, but looks like it has all the seals needed in it. I'm getting one tomorrow. I'll see if it's what i need.

I had a leak, every 2-3 weeks I would have to add fluid because it would start wining because it was almost empty. My problem was it was leaking from the cap, so I went to the junkyard an got a new reservoir cap for like 50 cents.

On the inside my car looks like a fighter jet.

hmm, interesting idea. Did it look like it was coming from the cap? like a residue going down the side of the reservoir? I've got lots of flud on he hoses, and area behind the power steering.

Ok, slight update to the thread. The power steering seal kit does not have the oring for the high pressure line. doh! So if that is what you need, don't get the seal kit.
