I went to the local dealer for a new serpentine belt today and was left uneasy.. The tech stated in his comments that the steering had a "clunk" in it. For the past month or so have noticed on the freeway that it drifts around like my cars track was too small for the ruts in the road.
After my car was done getting its belt replaced, I requested to talk to the tech and get his answer what was wrong because the service manager didn’t know. He said that the rack could be lose.
I went home and jacked the front into the air and checked things out. I tightened the two rack bolts, the sub frame bolts as well as inspecting the tie rod ends on the wheels which had no play. The rack bolts and sub frame did not budge a bit. I removed the jack stands and lowered the car back down just to test it again.
I still received the clunking sound as I turn the wheel lock to lock. The clunking is totally random and seems 4-5 times per side. However this time, I can feel the clunking from the firewall with my feet.
My question is do you think it is in the coupling that connects the rack to the steering shaft?

sounds like you have to lubricate the intermediate shaft in between the rac and the steering wheel... .....there plenty of bulletins on this problem....GM sell a syringe and lubricant for this problem......or you could replace the shaft itself........
Intermediate Steering Shaft needs the lube job..
Engineering changes have been made to the Service Parts available through SPO. The Service Parts will no longer require lubrication of the Intermediate Steering Shaft.
Install a new shaft following the Intermediate Steering Shaft Replacement procedure.
