k its like this. gears have the teeth that interlock with the other ones. its its just kinda skips a beat like there would be one of the teeth missing and itd slow down for a split second till it caught another tooth. but it doesnt do it everytime it goes around. lol i dont really know how what to say it just feels like it skips or slips every once in a while

OK. I'm going to try and help you out here as best I can. You're driving on the freeway or whatever. Clutch is all the way out, everything seems to be normal. Then for some reason the engine revs freely for a second as if the clutch is in, then goes back to normal. Something like that is an indicator the clutch is slipping. Not a guarantee that's the problem, just a possibility. Also ,if the clutch slips enough it'll get real hot it will glaze and sometimes you'll smell it. It's a distinct burnt smell sort of like overheated brakes. Sound familiar? Now listen to the transmission. Seriously. When you're sitting in your driveway or at a stoplight, leave the car in neutral and just listen (with the engine running, of course). When the clutch is out is there a bit of a grinding noise? Step on the clutch. Does that little noise go away? That's the release (throwout) bearing telling you it's time for a clutch. When the bearing goes bad, the clutch is likely going bad too. That's all I got. Hope it helps you.

its kinda like that but it does it so fast that the car doesnt even rev up any. it does it very quickly. its got 91000 on it is that when it usually needs to get replaced? also it doesntreally ever do it at normal city street speeds.

alright the ban is up so i can shed some light on this for you. it doesnt sound like your clutch, it sounds like your trans is going. from what your describing it sounds like the trans is slipping in and out of gear.

thats clutch chatter, and thats not really true. ive had clutch chatter before and the clutch is fine. if your replace the throwout bearing, it goes away and you dont need a new clutch

it wears out...beacuse you may not be driving properly. Either riding the clutch too much, or if its not the clutch..its gotta be the tranny or master cylinder. By the way about that, thorwout bearing noise...thats a common problem...its not really a problem its normal. It does not mean your bearing is going...thats what i thought and when I got a new spec throwout bearing with my spec stage 1 clutch. the noise was still there.

how about not going that fast?

or, go 75-80, steady your speed, and punch the gas. do the rpm's rise very quickly? or does it feel like the clutch is holding up? that will tell you.....if its slipping it will rev up and you wont go any faster.....time to get a new clutch.....i have this problem in 1st gear for some reason.....but 2nd-5th are fine......

any new info on this??

I am having a similar issue....after doing 70-75 for 10 mins 5th gear is making this loud grinding like sound. Car is still moving ok, but the sound is there for good now. If I never hit the 70 mark (all city) i never get the sound.

Any chance this is similar? Anyone know what this could be?

Oh yeah, I have a 01 Cav manual.....

Thanks

check the tranny fluid (gear oil)?? im kinda stumped on this and thats really rare.. could it be something else? maybe the engine missing? that would throw a missfire code, so it would lead me to believe that im still stumped until i get some more info.. sorry i couldnt be of more help... good luck though...

it could be a missfire cuz it feels that quick but what would cause that? when i was going 90 nuthin happened at all justsmoothe sailing. i dont hear a grinding noise but what am i supposed to hear over my exhaust? i have no @!#$in clue really i was thinkin of gettin the tranny fluid changed to that royal purple but i dont wanna if its just gonna get dummped out cuz i gotta get my 5th gear fixed. n i do have an oil leak but i dont think that really matters. i have the same exact car as him too

well if your trans is going, the worse thing you can do is change the fluid
