weapon r dragon intake
Thursday, August 18, 2005 8:26 PM
this post concerns all who have, have had, or have had experience with the weapon r dragon intake. i've done some searching and a little homework. I have decided that the aem cai will be a little more work than its worth, and that i want a nice, more simple, and cheaper intake. this is where the weapon r comes into play.

this seemed like a reasonable wai. i know that quite a few people on the .org have this intake on their 03-05 cavaliers, and i just had a few questions: are all the hookups(vacuum, etc.) the same as stock? are there any issues with rubbing on the hood? simple install? general satisfaction with the product?

thank you in advance to all who reply. all of your opinions are greatly appreciated.

I personally have the intake so I can help you out a bit.

I believe mine came with a new vacuum hose. It's a basic simple intake install and there MIGHT be slight hood rubbing but that can easily be fixed if you wanted to cut it down a tad bit but if it rubs the hood, it's rubbing the heat shield and not physically the hood.

I have been very satisfied with the intake system...I actually switched the filter from Dragon filter to the Secret Weapon filter for an experiment and it's a bit better flowing.

If you want either the Secret Weapon or Dragon filter, check out www.definedparts.com and you'll find them for a great price.

Good luck with your intake selection. If you have anymore questions, just ask.

LOL kind of defeats the point of having the dragon intake system...it's mainly the filter that runs it but I understand if for some reason you don't like it.

^^^ the dragon intake is also the cheapest "sure to work (ie not ebay, even if some work)" intake. The important part is having a pipe that fits under your hood, the filter I will probably also change since I have heard bad things about the foam filter.

Also NJ, what do yo cut if it rubs the hood, and is it easy ? Does it have any bad effects ?

i'm guessing you'd cut from the part that connects to the throttle body considering thats the only way that cutting is gonna lower the intake at all.

Yes that's the part I'm talking about.

The bad effects aren't really anything. You get a small mark in your heatshield but it never physically damages the hood, that's why it's not a big deal. Like said before, you can cut it down and not have it touch at all if you wanted to.

I have the dragon intake also, I also switched the filter. Mine rubbed on the hood a little, I cut the rubber coupler down .25", worked fine.

Same thing here, just shaved a little off each end of the rubber coupler that connects the elbow to the throttle body. I've also been told to not use the dragon filter. Probably going to change it to a K&N, or if anyone knows a good paper cone filter, feel free to share. The tube that came with my kit to connect to the crankcase breather was about 4 inches too short, also, so i just switched to a standalone filter connected to it and capped where the tube would go on the intake.

I'm currently using the secret weapon filter. Check it out...runs a bit better than the dragon.

I just got the dragon filter. Not installed yet. This aggressive sound thing I wonder. Raced a eco cavy with dragon intake and filter; could hear it all through the power band. Sounded bad ass! Buddy just got the secret weapon foam filter. Noticed a noticable difference in top RPM ( he has a 1.8T GTI). Got me convinced! I'll let you know how it is. I currently have a AEM filter. Anyone hear about loud sounding weapon R filters like the ones mentioned?? Weapon r keeps going on about the aggressive sound due to the double velocity stack filter..hmmm hope it works

My intake used to rub my hood a little.... I just removed the insulation and it stopped.... either that or it rubbed down enough that it doesnt touch anymore....

You know it really is just a tube with a filter on the end of it.

But i also purchased this intake and later went out and bought myself a $20 vatozone "specter" filter seems to work much better.

and yes having the engine suck in air inside the engine bay through a 2.5" pipe does make a loud noise. kinda cool even. but any intake will do this.

WELL... Did not notice any difference in sound! I did notice a little more mid range torque and top end (high RPM pull). I believe the car got more responsive. This weekend in Fl its hittin mid 40's. Will take the car out and see what a real difference this filter makes!
