to replace the cams does the chain cover come off?

to replace the cams on a 2.4L TC in a z24, do you have to pull off the timing chain cover?

or can you somehow remove the cams without the cover being off? i tried to pull the cam covers off and seemed to have trouble....they seemed to be stuck into the timing wall.

Yeah you gotta take off the cover, the timing chain, and the cam gears. Then you gotta separate the towers from the head. Keep your lifters in order as well

why does taking the cams off have to be so gay?

based on this question, you may be in slightly over your head here.

behind the timing cover....
there is a chain that drive the cams. It touches the cam gears.
The cam gears are bolted to the cams and must be removed before the cams can be removed.
Behind the gears are 4 bolts that hold the cam housings to the timing housing

I have been able to remove the housings piece by piece without removing the housing, but there is absolutely no way to do it without removing the timing cover and timing components.
The "over your head" statement is based on the fact that its impossible to remove the cam(s) from every engine ever created without first removing/disconnecting the timing components.

thanks.

You have to support the engine and then take the upper mount off. I hope you aren't doing this alone or with another inexperienced person. You can f up a lot of stuff.

I've done it a few times before and still want experienced help around.

i dont plan on doing this anytime in the near future, im just trying to read and learn as much about these engines as possible, so when i DO go to do these things, i know how.

OK, by definition, "near future" is not "near past". But that did not sound like reading to me.

when i said i had a problem getting the housing off, it was about a month ago when i was trying to just replace the cam cover gaskets, not remove the cams.

now that i have a new cavalier with under 80k miles, i wont have to be worrying about gaskets for a while longer i hope, and i have a spare 2.4L engine im bulding up anyways.....so when i do the cams chances are it will be out of the car.

however i wanted to see how moderate to hard it was to replace cams on these engines, just as a bolt on for now.

but i think im going to wait.
