I was wondering exactly how loud the exhaust is when the cat is gutted. It's just the stock exhaust off of the 03 Sunfire. I have a MIL eliminater. My friend says it shouldn't be obnoxiously loud. I just wanted some second opinions before I go and gut the cat.

It's loud...very loud. I replcaed mine with a Glasspack (the CAT exploded) and it's loud at idle, not obnoxiously loud. but get around 3500RPM or so, and guess what... OMFG!!! you had better have some nice mufflers, because it's going to get deafening. I didn't think the CAT made such an impact, but it does.

Gutting the cat is so ghetto/rice. If you don't put a new pipe going straight through it, the shape of the cat when gutted is going to kill the flow of your exhaust. Even then, its still a stupid idea...

Hey it's the best I can do for now. I'm trying to save up a wedding. I'm getting marriend next May and it's already running over $10,000, so I can't buy anything for my car, at least nothing obviously expensive because she'd flip if she new I blew a @!#$ load of money of parts for my car, until the wedding is over. Why is it that no matter what I post on this site the only feedback people give are negative. It's like you all stuck hot exhaust pipes up your asses and want to take out your frustrations on everyone else. I love my car as much as anybody else here. I'm just trying to have fun with it until I can by a nicer car. a "Sunfire" isn't exactly my idea of a dream car, but I do like it. I eventually would like to get something with a little more muscle but for now I'm just making do with my Sunfire. I'm not on here claiming to have the nicest car in here. Hell it's practically stock. Only things I've gotten for it are the wheels, the spark plug coils off of rksport, ngk iridium plugs, and a gatorback poly v belt. Nothing like what most of you have got, but so what? Hell even when all I did was post pics of my car after waxing I get a long ass lecture about how I didn't do it right. I gave it a compound job, cleaned it, waxed and polished it. Yet still someone has to put in their lame ass two cents in. Some people on here seem ok, but honestly the majority of you seem to be uptight pricks. I sometimes wonder how this site manages to stay running the way you all are. I rarely ever post because I know I won't get any of the answers I am looking for, just wise ass comments. I usually just use the search to see if I can find the answers myself. Anyway the car isn't loud at all even with the cat gutted. It's probably because I have a stock exhaust system on it. I don't have any aftermarket mufflers or anything like that. Oh well. At least I'm not getting a check engine light even with an empty cat.

D@mn it!!!
Read the thread about cats, I did the whole write up about it.
Plus if you wanted to remove the cat its about $7 for the replacement flex pipe and about $2 for an extra clamp, just find someone with a side grinder or cutting wheel and chopp that stuff off!
Plus about the noise level if you route the exhaust system ALL THE WAY BACK PAST the trunk and out past the bumper.
If you did I did at first I did all pipe no cat or muffler and cut a custom tip out of 2 1/2 pipe and should a 2 1/4 pipe inside that cust some slits around the tip. Sounds ok at idle and when you rip it getting this mean ace sound.
But all in all just do what you can afford!

Some tuner mag did a dyno test using a miata and found that gutting the cat lost about 1 hp at the wheels. I gutted the cat on my 05 sunfire, thought it would help my 1\8 mile times, not realy. Noise wise, not much diferant. If your exhaust is loud, it will be, with or without the cat.
I miss my Sunfire, I want it back!
MMMM, HIDs
You will be missed.
I was jsut looking for some NEW infor and others input on this idea. Im happy to hear the responses though! I will probobly look into a high flow cat, a resonator, and a maybe a flowmaster on the end, I dont want to kill the performance i do have just to quiet it up. I can easily pull out in second and go up a good hill like that from a dead start, i notice i dont see much power about 3500 rpm's. Luckily money isnt the issue, but i dont want to spend a fortune either. Just a good sounding and working car is all i need. thank you all for the input and stories

I also have the link for the high-flow cats vs. oem article on my site that Import tuner did on them.
Found out that unless you are running a really high-end car, or need the light weight stuff to meet a class regulation, they really just cost to much for the amount of power they give you over the stock.
If you want to do something a little diffrent maybe try a full exhaust system upgrade with a similar muffler as mine single input/dual outs and run a pair of pipes out the back. You should have enough room to run a small pair of glass packs as kinda of tips.
Really my car w/o a cat and a high flow muffler doesn't sound that loud inside the car, and Sunfires/Cavies with 2.2's make max trq at 4000RPMs so opening it up a little with move your power band a little higher.
If you shift a little bit more over that you will see good strong shifts, when I shift over 4500-4700 the power is not really there unless I'm in second gear (3spd auto). But my car is built a little more for high revs with the intake and auto trans.

I have gotten a Walker High Flow cat, and just a Glass Pack for a resonator, ill weld on a bung for the O2. I got it for 85$ So im going to trythat, and see how the current cat back sounds with it. Thanks for the info, everyone has been a help.
