I would look into swapping a 4t40 4 speed transmission if you can, or better yet a 5-speed.

I'm not thinking clearly, if you're going to swap a tranny, put in an ld9. You'll have a lot more power. Granted, it will be more expensive, but if you get a junkyard engine and tranny...life could be good.

its an automatic i believe it has 100,000 on it i also have the flywheel and torque converter. I bought the engine and tranny combo off some guy guz i wanted the motor and im putting a 5 speed on it. How good it works i dont know? Never tried it out but if ya want just come get it. Like i said i have no clue how good it works i just want it gone. If ya want it its yours.

If your looking for durability, the 3 speed (TH125C / 3T40) is the strongest transmission available in a J, auto or manual. It won't give you the economy of the others though, due to the lack of an overdrive. The gear ratios are also limited to just 3.73:1 max, some of which can be made up for with the proper torque converter and tire sizing. It is a mechanically (read hydraulic) controlled transmission and requires it to be opened for anything other than minor fine tuning of the shift points. There are three shift kits available for it, Superior, TransGo and JBP. There is the Red Eagle frictions and Kolene steels available, for the utmost in durability. Torque converters (the 4T40E uses the same one) are also available from most race / high performance TC companies, by special order or limited production runs (Yank is my favorite). LSDs are available through PhantomGrip, Team Green(if they have finished them) and Engineered Performance. More info and links can be found here.

If your going to race with an automatic, I would definitely go with the TH125C, simply because of it's durability and tighter gear spacing. The 4T40E is better suited for cruising and economy, besides 4th gear(overdrive) only engages at cruising speeds, not WOT, so your still only using 3 gears. On the 4T40E, fist gear has a lower ratio for better initial acceleration on daily driving, but the spacing between gears is greater, creating the need for a wider powerband from the motor (and lowers the peak torque the motor is capable of developing). This spacing could cause you to go out of your powerband during shifts. This is all dependant on the motor, drive train and chassis weight, the drive train must be tuned for the application, just the4 same as the motor and chassis are.

The TH125C only fits the 2.2/2200s, the 60*V6s and the 3.3/3300 V6s, but can be made to fit other motors, if you make an adaptor plate and some work with the throttle linkage to fit the TV cable.

While in stock form, performance wise, these trannies suck, many underestimate the capabilities of them. It just takes time and knowledge to build one for performance / race use. It is definitely not the do all of transmissions, but the potential is there, if used in the correct application.

he's right I'll be using my auto 3 spd on my boosted 2200 right now I'm with you I need to find a 2200 long block so I don't have to buy another daily driver. but then I will hope to successfully take the slowest form of j-body and transform it to something hopefully fast enough to put the slowest stock j in history in the record books for being fast.

Good call. That wont bolt to your motor, nor will the PCM command it to shift.
