Ok so I desided to P&P a 99 2.4L head today in a class that I am taking. Just for fun I put it on the flow bench before porting it and got some pretty interesting numbers. The exhuast side of the head need ALOT of work and you can tell just by looking but the interesting thing is that it flowed good all the way to .500 lift which means that you can put a pretty nice cam in are heads and make power. I plan on getting the P&P job done in the next 4 to 5 days want to take my time to get it right and I will post the new numbers. I really dont plan on to much work to the intake side but I am going to tune up the exhuast.

At what depression and on what type of bench did you flow that head because there is no way a "stock LD9 head" flows more than an 086 HO head, 28" hg, 60* air temp and 70 % humidity are the standards I believe and a superflow 1200 or 600 flowbench that most pro shops use to measure airflow thru a head. The flow numbers can be manipulated any way you want depending on how you calibrate and what flow bench you use.
The 086 head has larger intake and exhaust ports and valves than the LD9 head so no way it flows more.
2000 Z24 5spd header & catback for now.
I know I posted numbers before and Joe Kenefic posted numbers back in the Vizzon era. I will have to see if I can find them

The LD9 head does out flow the 086 till around .250 lift because it has more velocity because of smaller ports, however after .250 lift the Ld9 head loses efficiency and doesnt flow as well because the 086 has larger ports, hence the 086 flows better at higher lift! With the exhaust this happens around .200 lift. Also notice that all the other heads (456, 995) also out flow the 086 head at lower lift but then become inefficent and dont flow as well as the 086 at higher lift!!

I was there. I take the class with him and I couldn't believe these numbers. My friend here at school recently P&P some dart iron eagles for his 383 stroker and these numbers on the intake side are very, very close to out flowing his head. Exhaust as Pat said needs a lot of work. I can't for him to get this done.

ive got a brand new 2.4 head that has been ported and bare for sale , head cost me 200 and port work was 300 , also got a port matched HO intake with enlarged tb opening
unfortunately no before or after numbers
I ran the flow bench at 28" hg and it was in a shop so what ever out side air was (about 80) and humitiy for PA is usally around 60% and I used a SF 600 flow bench. Now as far as I know it is calibrated corectly and the numbers I got I check by taking every thing off the bench and stating over and I got the same numbers each time so figure they are right. Now as for the number you are comparing to the 086 casting is out flowing me at .300 lift on the intake and at .200 on the exhaust which just shows that the 086 is better at higher lift and if I am not mistaken did those heads have like a .410 lift cam in them (at least I think thats the w41 head and cam setup) and just for a reference are cars stock have around a .354 lift intake and .346 exhuast. Maybe thats why those nubers look that way i am not sure but this is what I got and for all right the are correct as much as I can make them.

Ok so I got one of the chambers done today and flowed it and I got some pretty impressive nubers out of the exhuast side. O yes I have pictures as well. As you can see I did make some very nice improvments over stock on the exhaust side there maybe some more to be made but I am pretty happy with what I have and since this is my first port job ever I cant complan

This is a stellar thread! Very nice work man, and even better information. I'm gonna have to watch this thread like a hawk as I've got a spare and bare 2.4 head I've been wanting to work on. Nice gains too, this seems like a pretty kick ass class you are taking.
Hey thankx. Yeah the class rock its a high performance / chassie fabrication class at wyotech so I have learned alot of really cool stuff. As for the head I am hoping to get it on a car ASAP and see what kind of numbers it puts down and I hope to see some desent gains in higher RPM range and this head should be great for boost or even N/A. More pics to come.
BTW anyone in the PA area that has a HO intake I would like to flow that and see what the nubers look like.

I am very impressed with the numbers Pat got. I couldn't believe how much material he removed. All I saw for one whole day was aluminum flying. Ha. The numbers were deff impressive, but I was sure we would see 300 cfm on intake. Oh well. Now finish that head Pat and get it fixed!

I really dont think I would charge that much I was thinking like for the hole head to get the same port job I just did to ming 150 buckx maybe thats to disasseble the head port & polish it and reassemble the head and to flow it before and after. I am really not sure what its worth. I am mean I have had a 2.4L head P&P by a machine shop and I know what they charged me and it was alot more than thatand they didnt even flow it. For me to do it since this is a class thing if you get at me some time in the next 3 months while I am in class cuz after I am out I will lose the flow bench.

ok, so ive got 3 months to come up with $150?
ive got the head that came off my 97 Z lying around yet, its got stainless valves and it was cleaned up and decked and only saw like 5000 miles of use after, so it should still be damn clean yet.
i would send it completly bare so you would only have to get after the ports and thats it. any cheaper possibly?
anybody know how much it costs to ship a head?

I dont see why not I could knock off like 50 buckx or so I mean I check around here to just get port matching and no flow bench is like 300 buckx I am doing why mnore than that but yeah 3 months ship it to me and I will do the P&P job and ship it back. Just email me when you want it done.
