i have a 98 z24... when i bought it, it had a bigger alternator pulley by AEM....well i got a smaller crank pulley and put them 2 together.... so i had bigger alt. smaller crank....well when i did that it ran just fine and 5 miles later i wasnt getting a charge from my alternator....so i put the stock pulleys back on and it still didnt charge and my alternator was shot....could it have been my alternator was already goin to @!#$ or what...now i have smaller crank and smaller alternator pulley,,, now that i have my new alternator could i put the bigger alt pulley and the smaller crank pulley on together without doing anything to my alternator again????
thanks

when you put the stock pulleys back on did you charge the battery back up??

do you have a volt or amp gauge?

You are severely under driving your alternator.
Brad polity pointed out the the AEM even though it is bigger is actually under driven the alternator.
At idle your alternator is spinning about 1800 RPM.
With the under driven crank and alternator. It is spinning about 1000 RPM.
These are very rough guesses. I do not have all the pulley diameters with me.

You alternator was probably on its way out, but if you have a system your alternator will probably die again.

honestly, i would say ditch either one of the pulleys and just run one of them for now. you can still find stock sized aluminum crank pulleys out there, and if your patient mike (md ld9) will have another group buy sometime for his. buy one of them and just run the AEM on the alternator and you should be ok. IMHO if you plan on having any kind of stereo system in the car dont even bother with any of the underdrive stuff, just get stock sized aluminum's and live happy knowing your alternator wont be done for down the road.

^^ i doubt it. if you used hp tuners to up your idle to say 1000 rpm's and your car was manual everything i could see it though.

well, what aftermarket alternators have a higher idle amperage/ lower idle? thatll probaly be hella hard to find for my eco, DAMN!

Listen F***ers. FASTERTHANAHONDA is a joke because I WORK FOR HONDA. I'll talk @!#$ about Fords to, that doesn't mean I can beat a 12 second mustang.

when i first bought the car it had the aftermarket AEM alt pulley....well i had a system in it and when the bass hit my lights didnt even dim....but as soon as i put the crank pulley on it died. so i have the crank pulley on right now and stock alt so i think i will just let that be....

yeah man you should be ok with that, but eventually with that stereo and the use of the UD crank pulley your alternator is going to say goodbye. its just a matter of time. even stock vehicles with no UD pulley's, especially ours with even small stereo's fry the alternator's.

but sometimes its different, i think its hit or miss honestly, you might be ok with the setup your running, only time will tell.

i have the aem alt pulley, and a smaller crank pulley.. my alt died once already, and so did my battery so i got em changed out... i also have a 500w amp on a 12.. it doesnt charge well when i idle for long periods of time so sometimes i have to sit there and give it gas so that it idles at about 1-1.2 itll probably go out again, but im hopin md ld9's pulleys are done by then. i got the alt so im just waiting on the crank
