Tuesday, December 18, 2007 6:52 PM
well decided to stay with the cav and not get a new car. So I want to start putting more money in it. Want to have a gm supercharger by spring. any thoughts on things to get before then?

While mounts and exhaust are very good mods, I would suggest get a tranny cooler for that auto tranny. This should help it last longer. It shold also take the heat better once the charger goes on.

huh?! ive got almost a grand in just my exhaust and its nothing really THAT special. when i re-do it someday its going to be well over 1k. most shop's will charge about $500 to do the downpipe/catback piping sections, then you gotta buy your header, high flow cat, muffler... and maybe a resonator as well. (you dont NEED a resonator though) the exhaust part of it has been proven to really not be needed anyways (with the charger i mean). wade put down 214whp with a completly stock exhaust with his m45.

and all the mounts combind would probly be around $350. (if you got all the good ones)

IMO...
TTR upper
TTR auto mount
MD LD9's pulley's
Tranny fluid flush and replace filter

^^^^^ You have spent way tooo on your exhaust. I have re-done my exhaust about 3 times. I buy my own mufflers and take them to the exhaust shop. Not included muffler's I have about $350 in my exhaust, also not including header, which was $130. To say exhaust is not needed on a boosted car is well not bright. I understand good numbers were had with stock exhaust, but better numbers can be had with bigger exhaust.

so NOT including your muffler, which we'll say was $50 to be safe, and NOT including your $130 header.. yeah that $350.00 sounds low for a exhuast. but then when you add it all together you sir have spent more than this guy has to spend.

??? ill just do a break down of my setup so you can see.

USED rk sport 4-2-1 header, was $250.00 (these normally go for $400 something brand new)
2.5" mandrel bent downpipe with 2.5 HFC, was $230 installed at the local exhaust shop
Mangaflow open-flow series muffler, $100 shipped off Ebay
2.25" mandrel bent catback and muffler installed, was $300 installed at the local exhaust shop.

that equals $880, which as i stated is almost a grand. how is that spending too much? i like quality parts and equipment, whats the problem?

if the car already makes 214whp with a stock exhaust when most of the normal m45 powered cars aint putting down 200 with full exhausts and a bunch of bolt-ons, why is it not bright? it really isnt NEEDED now is it? sure.. its going to help things, but its not NEEDED.

lol exhaust is cheap, use johns numbers for example, header 130, or use mine used rk 4-2-1 = 115 shipped then add say 100 for muffler, 30 for a resonator of choice, hi-flow cat if u want, since thats what i have in my stuff right now 50, then go to customtubesinc.com and pic up the 2.5in mandrel bent catback 150 + 20ish for shipping. now try and tell me exhust is expensive... 480 with johns header, a hiflow cat, and a res, and thats me blowing prices outta the water, u could easily have the res for cheaper, as well as run no cat like i plan to, also u could easily find a muffler for quite a bit less, so for my new exhaust it will cost about 355 supposing i found my muffler for 50 and payed 20 for a res like i can. only thing i didnt add in was price to install cuz i do my own installs on EVERYTHING even weld my own stuff, just dont have a welder atm but its what like 25 to get them to weld it up.

What you did not get out of my post is I have done my exhaust 3 different times. All 3 times I have spent $350. I can get a place to install 2.50" piping from header bck to my muffler for like $80, plus my $130 and my $50 you have $260. See what I'm getting at. Thank you.

then your not getting mandrel bent piping and you go to exhaust shops that like to give away they're work. lucky you.

my mandrel bent downpipe bend section was $45 ALONE. for what, 6" of pipe? most shops dont have the mandrel bender and need to order out for the bends and thats where MINE got really expensive. crush bent piping is cheap stuff, definatly NOT saying that it doesnt get the job done, which it does... i just prefer mandrel cuz its more professional.

I also payed around 500 to have mandrel bends and everything I already paid for welded up. I also went this route because I wasn't going to pay for aluminized steel...especially when everything else I had was stainless, as well as because of the lovely weather Illinois gets.

This is the break down for my exhaust:

custon tubes 3" was $210 shipped
header was $160
Resonator was $45
Muffler $90ish
Down pipe $45
Insatllation $130( he did spend quite a bit of time wrestling in the 3" piping)

So I agree full exhaust might be a bit much on a $400 budget for a non do it yourselfer or if you dont know someone. However you could do a cat back and muffler for that money. A cheap resonator cost $20 and a Turbo muffler can ber found as cheap as $20 in summit racing along with a customtubes catback or a header and motor mounts would be a nice upgrade too.

You are correct it is not mandrel bent piping. You are correct not many shops have mandrel benders. I think there is only one in Florida. For what I need mandrel bent pipe is not needed. You are correct the shop I go to does great work and cheap, but that is what people drive 30+ miles to them. This topic was never about mandrel bent piping versus normal. I did not know we were talking about mandrel bent. Usually when people are asking about mods and staying under a certain price they are not worrried about having the 100% best option, but price and getting the job done, which normal piping does.

Yeah your right. Most people dont even care about mandrel as it doesn't help as much as people think. The main reason I prefer it is because of the look.

Unless you're building a high RPM motor, you don't need mandrel bends.

That being said, I will not put an exhaust in my car unless it has mandrel bends. I'm just a little nuts that way.
