Hey Everyone.
Im looking at picking up my first J bod. this week. Im grabbin it for $900, its got a blown motor, 5spd, mint body, 124km's etc etc.
Now, sourcing a new motor, at this point atleast, i dont think will be an issue. I know theres about 15+ J bodies at my local junkyard for me to pick through (one being a 2003)
The question i have is in regards to physically replaceing the motor. I did a search and it came up with nothing. Im guessing its going to much diffrent then my LSx F-bodies. (I happend to pull a 6.0L V8 today out of my '89 Iroc) The RWD V8's are fairly straight forward and the FWD's are intimidating.
Is there anywhere i can find a How-To guide on replacing the motor?
Are there any parts i should be replacing while its out? (im going to do the clutch)
Thanks! Im excited to finally drive a car that wont be begging for 15mpg haha. Though i will miss 422rwhp/401rwtq (584rwhp/576rwtq on spray) but summer will come back eventually and the winter just means time for a bigger cam, better heads, new trans & clutch, 1 7/8" headers etc.
Anywho, enough of a rant about my camaro. I need to get this J body goin. Also, anyone have approximate times on motor replacement?

unlpug everything, take the axle nuts off, undo lower ball joints, take a pry bar stick behind the axles where the go in the tranny and yank real hard to pop them out of the tranny.
Then take and suppoer the engine taking the trany mount bolts out of the tranny and where they go in the frame to remove the whole mount, Undo upper mount and bottom mount. Take the hood off and lift at a angle from the balancer side first. Also make sure to undo the cable of the tranny and undo power stearing pump.
Pretty straight foward if you ask me. Take me about 20mins more pulling it out compared to droping my 95 t/a's out the bottom.
I have done it 100% by myself 3 times now. Pretty easy, couple things I always forget, heater hose on the back of the engine and crank position sensor next to the oil filter. other than that, pretty easy, also helps if you take of the harmonic balancer first too but it comes out with it on.

i find it less messy if you just pull the torque converter bolts and bellhousing bolts
