Ecotec Power
Wednesday, October 22, 2008 4:47 PM
Hey Guys.. the old 2200's starting to get boring ( and rough ) so its looking like my 00 sunfire might get an eco swap ( 03 + )

i got the guide here : http://www.j-body.org/forums/read.php?f=30&i=38274&t=38274 printed out, and im gonna read it a few times 2.

I was just wondering, would the ecotec with a header, full exhast, high flo cat, and cold air intake be enough power for most people ?

I seen there was a few posts about gm superchargers and that kind of got my attention.. but i dont think im looking for anything crazy , just a hell of alot better then what i got..

what i currently have:
2000 sunfire
2.2 ( 2200)
full cold air
no header ( oem)
fart can
NO POWER ( at all ) chirp second if i really wanted to.. but still gutless..

is an eco with mods above going to be a big improvment ? my gfs 08 G5 is realllyy sweet for power, ( in the higher rpm range ) , chirps 3rd no problem.. love it.

i hope a 03+ eco with those mods will be close to the same, that would be nice, even better if it was a little more, any other cheaper effective mods ? MSD maybe ?

Thanks a ton, even tho it prolly sounds like a rice bucket at this point. Hold the smart ass comments please, they dont help any.

well my 03 pulls low 15's high 14 once. i have a full header back exhaust 2.5 in, no cat and a flowmaster44. and a ram air intake. itll make you happy and if you need more, get the m62 for it. or be wild and try and modify a m90 to fit.

screw the GMPP SC! Get Hahn Stage 1 or 2. You'll love it way more then you'd ever love the M62

Re: Ecotec Power

focus on getting the engine in the car. trust me, you will LOVE it.

when I first swapped the skwirl I was in heaven. Once I got used to it I started modding a bit more.

when my 98 sunfire 2.2 beater died, I got my hands on an 04 coupe 5 speed and fell in love all over again.

cover your bases, and it should be a relatively easy swap.
if you have any questions, feel free to PM me.

I made the upgrade from a LN2 to the L61. I only have a K&N intake and Rksport engine mounts. Its no speed demon, but it is spunkier than the old LN2.

I would also add RKsport or TTR engine mounts to your list.

very few would argue against this swap. maybe one or two would try to talk you into a 2.4 LD9, but i think the majority of J Body owners either have or want the ecotec l61

Get all the parts you need in a pile, and drive the car into it.
They will find their way into the correct places.

what sucks about even the eco is 80% of cars that are new now like 08/09 come stock with 10-30 more hp in the base models, its rather pathetic really, my modded eco just matches them stock oooohhh! so unless you have a crapload of money at least a few thousand at a time to drop in it, its worth it for the umph difference, even though its not super duper, but it still wont be too great. I still love my weak little eco though!

Re: Ecotec Power

So the new Eco's have 10-30 stock than a 2004 Eco stock?

And I was told the new intake manifolds are designed to add about 3 more hp....Well maybe I should say torque.

no unless you mean the 2.4 eco, and my eco is an 05. I meant other 4 cylinder cars in general. check out the hp numbers on a few of them when you get bored.

keep in mind that your car may have a weight advantage over a new car making 10-30 more.......

Miscommunication.

Only thing I found that made more horsepower stock than the Eco was certain B16's, B18's, and the B17.

Re: Ecotec Power

keep looking, theres quite a few out there, and alot weigh around the same if not less than a 05 sedan auto, so weight to power ratio is not a big factor usually, just the ecotec is not a wicked power plant, it has enough to get the job done, but not a super job, unless you dump a few thousand on boost and tuning, and maybe another 3 on building it as well.

any model cavalier eco-140hp
base model impreza- 170 hp
base caliber-148hp
base lancer-152hp
base civic-140hp
base milan-160hp
base beetle- 150hp
base rabbit-170hp
tc-161hp
xb-158hp
mazda3 base- 144hp
these listed are base models in same class as the cavalier. not to mention all the ls, gt, gti, srt, si, speed, evo, sti, etc versions of themselves, our poor car only came with one option the 140hp eco. Wich like i said its a nice engine, runs strong etc, but too keep up with most traffic you HAVE to be modded or you get ran over, sucks. Do love the gas mileage as well though on my eco, seems to get a bit more than my 2200.

op throw the eco in, you will love it way better than the non-resonsive 2200.

may I remind YOU I drive a sedan, its not that light, especially with car seat, system, spare tire, full interior, heavy exhaust etc. when i race at sir i race the acr with full interior, system, everything, so I am racing my real daily driver, not a stripped version of my daily, or a car I only drive for racing at the track, so at the track especially its not that light, you want to say I have a light car, well i dont anymore, my crx d16z6, that was light and was built to race, but thats another story.

Now that we are all "reminded"

Do and eco swap and you will enjoy it. I don't have my exhaust done yet, so completely stock I can chirp hard going into third and into fourth. However when I make a really good shift its not gonna chirp because its nice and smoooooth.

Doesn't matter what other cars make. Our cavs will find a way

This might be the most relevant post. I've done the swap. Just going from a bolt on 2200 to a dead stock L61.....wow.

Keep in mind stock for stock you are gaining 25hp.

well seeing as you're carrying around that extra weight, and packing the 4t40e slushbox, keeping up with cars that have "30hp more" is pretty impressive imo

to the OP: get that swap done! join the darkside!

yeah I hope its going to make a big diff, well something noticeable anyway !!

my motors been really acting up lately and its really pushing me to do this sooner, im so close to buying a B18 civic, but i already got a full new body kit, lowering kit, intake, headers , etc.. for the sunfire and everyone seems to love the color.

Here is my car:

plus i got the drifter front bumper, dragon Z dual rear, and drifter sides, and 2 lowering kits ( ebay coil overs, and old fashion 2" drop springs ) which are best to use ??

I also have a huuggeeee sub box that is extreme heavy, but not willing to part with yet ( its intense )

anyways, does anyone have an eco with just Header, Full Intake, and Exhaust and happy with there power and take off levels ?

is it going to be any faster then my g/fs 08 STOCK G5 (5-spd) ??

Thanks guys, best and most helpful forum ever.

Re: Ecotec Power

does anyone know here what would cause my car to buck and backfire ? it started at just high speeds but now it dies at low speeds and back fires louder then a shotgun lol i have changed the plug wires and plugs, rear o2 sensor, gas lines, fuel filter, oil filter, oil change, the engine light use to always be on and now its off and wont come back on. I really dont know whats wrong and no garage can tell me.
it bucks like its out of gas, and even with a full tank.. I can tell when its going to do it bc i can smell the gas like 15 secs before it happens, its extremely hard on gas , 30 mins = 1/2 tank !!!! ( going 120-160kmh mind you ) please, someone must be smarter then the mechanics down here, some said it was all the things listed above but i already spent 400 so far with nothing to show but even worse problems...
1 mechanic said it might be the EVAP ?? something in the tank that reads pressure ? he took the gas cap off while it was running and the pressure didnt change on the computer..

its so annoying to have a car you cant drivee !!

I personally think it may be either..

Front manifold O2 Sensor..
injectors
powerpack ( distrubter thingy )
something falty either electrical or gas

thanks for any help..

Re: Ecotec Power

It is usually a fuel delivery problem.

Have you changed your fuel filter every 15k like it should?

Have you had your fuel injection system cleaning done recently?

you got an injector that getting stuck open, or one of your coilpacks is bad (or going bad)

change the coils first then attack the injectors next.
