i have a 2000 2.2 ohv and im looking to hopefully get about 20hp out of it, without opening up the motor. I need something a little more before i do an ecotec swap(hopefully next year)
i have a few ideas and im looking for opinions on how much hp i might gain from these mods.
1. im thinking about an intake with say an K&N air filter. open to suggestions on good companys
2. Underdrive pulley kit. (alternator size isn't a big issue, im not running a aftermarket stereo.)
3. elimanating the ac pulley (ac dosn't work anymore
4. bigger TB if possible. (porting the stock one, or buying bigger one)
any suggestions would help out. Any opinions on brands to buy or sizes ect ect would be great
one more question, and i realize i might get burned for this one, but does anyone know why the 96 2.2 ohv is rated at 120hp and the 2000 2.2 is rated at 115hp?
Fill out your profile, it will help in the future.
Also, since you seem to be leaning towards basic bolt-ons, think about getting new exhaust.
Pacesetter header, high flow cat, resonator, 2 1/2 inch piping, no fart can, and you're good. That should help.
As for the intake, don't stress too much about what type you get, they all do basically the same thing. Good luck.
profile filled out!
sorry, never figured i had much to say about my stock 2000 2.2 cavalier lol
do you think i can get there with an exhaust system? if so that would be great! and i would never get a fart can, (hate the sound and the rice look) i would be happy if i could retain my stock muffler. I don't want my car to be loud. Could i also use this exhaust set up described on an ecotec swap? (i realize i wouldn't be able to use the header)
Why waste the money? Your going to swap for an eco in the spring?.......you should just save your money for the swap or use it to buy what you need to do it......end thread.....
Buy a 2.4 instead of being a poser with z24 wheels on a car not worthy of them.
FORGET GIRLS GONE WILD WE HAVE GOVERNMENT SPENDING GONE WILD!
Well on further consideration i was thinking the same thing. Maybe i should be just saving for parts for the swap. I just did a full tune up on my cav a couple days ago and found it a little more peppier. (what can i say i got a little over overzealous)
when i bought this car it was going to be strictly a daily driver (hence the 2.2 with better fuel milage). I wasn't planning on doing much to it at all. What can i say i got hit with the bug. ITs hard to leave things stock. What i really wanted was an 02 with an ecotec but this car was the right price at the time.
Well Wade, Im not sure if your being sarcastic or a dick. This is the reason im always cautious of posting on j-body.org. I get my balls busted for trying to improve the look of my car. IMO i think it looks 20 times better then stock hood caps. Thats the funny thing about opinions, everybody has them.
an exhaust setup for your LN2 will bolt up to ur Ecotec with no problems....header is different, but thats it. However, save your money and wait till the swap,
yeah, investing in parts that will transfer over is a good idea, like a cat back system, but other than that, save up......youll need it.
If your going for an eco swap just dont even worry about the 2200 ohv. And good luck on it. Make sure you read up too lots of good info on the org. remember search button is your friend because heaven f orbid you make a new thread on something someone else has already done/ask. (just saving you from future burs) That's why i only post like once every 3 months anyway.

You'll get about 25 hp from the L61 swap!
save up for the swap. modding the 2200 is a waste of money if you're just going to put an L61 in anyway.

X2 i have a 2001 2200 in my cavalier, i have bolted up an intake, exhaust, shorter belt (ac delete) and have noticed if anything my car seems slower than before... if your bolting up an eco, save your money. i got most of my mods "free" through my friend so i have very very little money invested in this car....
Hey thanks for all of the response. I think I have learned a valuable lesson from all of this. Don't buy a 2.2 ohv cavalier and expect to get any performance out of the motor. Im going to take said advice and start saving for ecotec parts.
oh, you can get performance out of it, you just need patence and time. I'll be doing my LN2 and I'm looking for a decent # with it too. but I'm taking my time and waiting for deals and making my own things.
yeah you can make power out of the motors, but its not worth it if your getting the L61, its much much easier to find power parts for.
without boosting a LN2 its very hard to get decent gains.
I had my car dynoed today at my friends shop.
i put down 85whp stock with a K+N filter. now im putting down 91whp *WOOT* /sarcasm.
im getting a cobalt SS SC in june(ish) thats where my money is going.
put the money to good use then and get the TC. SC is is old now.

It takes money and time. It's just not worth messing with too much if you already have a swap planned. I'd recommend putting 2.5" high flow cat with 2.5" piping running through an 18" resonator and to a 2.5" in/ 2" dual out muffler and then your choice in tips. You can also go into running your intake into your fender as it will require minimal modification to connect to the eco.

If you're not worried about it being loud just run 2.5" pipe from a high flow cat through a 2.5in/out muffler.

thats what on my car.
*OBX header
*high flow cat
*2.5 pipe
*high flow muffler with magnaflow dual tips
Sound great, really not that loud! cops dont like it I have 2 warnings for Amplified exhaust!
