I've got a 1998 2200 5-speed.
I'm getting a 96' automatic with a 2.4 in it(complete).
The first question is, can I use the 96' 2.4 in my 98' jbody?
Asides from the manual transmission what else do I need?
(adding to this.. since my cavalier is already a manual, the manual 2.4 tranny will bolt right up correct?)

Yes you can use the 96 engine in your 98.
Yes the manual 2.4 tranny will bolt right up.
Now im not too sure on the pcm question you had.

You can have your PCM reflashed, since it is physically the same as a 2.4 PCM. Just have it reflashed to a 97-99, doesn't matter which year, just not a 96 since some 96's had different PCM's... Plus the 96's aren't flashable by HPT.

So my best option here would to get my current(2200) ecu reflashed for a 2.4?

Can I just write down a VIN# from a junkyard, or is there some law regarding using another cars VIN# for any use?

all you really need the VIN for is to get a flash put on like they will use that vin so they can get the program for it, the files aren't list 2.4 5spd j body, i used EBAY for a VIN

With the reflash, do I have to take the whole car or can I pull out the pcm and just take it?

yes and no lol not a direct fit but it will bolt up to the motor as the 2001 had a getrag and 98 had an isuzu

Ok the question is about the trans will it mount upwith out making mounts for it?cause i have a auto in my car now. is worth doing the swapp if i have everything?
