removing your cat will gain you maybe 1hp. possibly a couple more. it's not really worth it. it will however gain you a check engine light because your rear O2 sensor will be giving the same readings as your front causing a catalyst inefficiency code (i believe P0420). as for your resonator, again, no noticable gains. as far as what can be harmed, with the resonator removal you won't harm anything. with the cat removal you won't really harm anything, you'll just throw a code and if your state has an emissions inspection then you'll probably fail it (i know you will in ny but i cannot speak for other states where i'm not familiar with the regulations). basically what i'm trying to say is that for MOST applications (save things like track only race cars and such) it's not really worth it to remove the cat and the resonator is just personal preference. i think most aftermarket cat-backs eliminate the resonator anyway, but i could be mistaken.
what will it harm??? The environment ! Other than that....Nothing !
I had done it with the stock configuration and didn't lower my ET or improve my MPH. It sounded like @!#$ also !
Get a Header. Hi-flo cat, cat back and then you'll see some interesting gains.
2003 Ecotec Z24
14.88 @ 93.92 mph
Actually, a lot of factory cars can loose performance, since they are tuned to have that cat in the exhaust.
Either way you are going to go up or down a handful of ponies, and for the federal offense it is to remove an emissions control devise, not worth it.
yep i agree with the above... on the converter situation.
you can buy a very nice high-flow cat and it will do a nice job of keeping the car operating the way it was meant to as well as keep you legal and within mother earth's good graces.
as for the resonator... ditch it. put a piece of regular pipe in there and just run your stock muffler. it will help out with flow as well as give the exhaust a different sound, not loud but not 'stock' either.
I believe I can see the future... as I repeat the same routine....
yeah, forgot to mention that, no harm in removing the resinator.

Don't remove. It is a waste of time. The resonator is a staight through design anyway so you are not going to gain anything by removing it. Without a resonater your exhaust will sound raspy and crackly. A resonator is a key component to any good sounding exhaust.

X2 It all depends on the sound you're looking to get out of it...
In addition, leave the cat alone or go with a high flow... It's not worth the check engine light, its a federal offense, and the air you breathe will be even dirtier.
just my $.02

Yes, if you take out the resonator, it will produce a different sound. If it were me, I would go with 2.25 inch pipe. I am assuming you are trying to say you already have a Tsudo header... That with a high flow cat, 2.25 inch pipe, and a decent muffler will flow pretty well IMO. hope it helps...
