i know that this is a stupid question, looking at the motor from the front of the car all the way to the left is the #1 cylinder right?????

Just one more thing to consider... in the car world, the left and right side of the car is always described as if you're sitting in the passenger's seat.
But I'm not going to get into where the left hand side of the engine is in a front wheel drive car.

I always considered the front of the engine to be where the accessory drive PTO from the crank to be... But then, everything I ever wrenched on (Except for my dad's Mopar minivans) in my driveway or on the flagstone patio had the engine mounted longways.
Go beyond the "bolt-on".
the side of the engine with the flywheel is the highest number(s)
belt drive side is the smallest number, like nickle said.
