Quad family lifters... how do you tell them apart?
Thursday, February 05, 2009 4:42 PM
ok so today i went and bought a brand new 2.3 lifter for my ld9 cam tower boring project just to get the right size... and decided to take some pictures of it next to a stock 2.4 lifter to show the size difference.

im also wondering how you tell if the 2.3 lifter is the lightweight version or the regular? and is the one i have the lightweight one?

stock 2.4 33mm on the left and stock 2.3 35mm on the right:

and with a 2.4 cam tower.... (the 2.4 lifter fits snugly inside the bore, whereas the 2.3 doesnt even come close to fitting)

Needing 2.3 oil pump stuff? PM me...

from my readings, there was no part# difference between the lighter one and the heavier 2.3L lifter.

think your best bet might be to put them on a scale at a UPS or something or talk to an engine building shop and see if they can figure it out before they order them.

Just out of curiosity what is the purpose of a lighter lifter in our motors? if anything I would think the heavier lifter would help since the cam pushes down on the lifter instead of lifting it. Kind of giving it a hand if you would. I could see its use if the cam actually lifted the lifter. the only thing i can think it would affect is valve float and i dont hear about that too much with our motors.

The second one is the light one. I currently have 16 "heavy" ones in my engine. The light ones help reduce the chance of valve float.

i worry about weight in absolutely everything. especially when it comes to my 97.

you cant go wrong with lighter valvetrain anyway!

True cant argue with that one.

The parts numbers are the same.

Basically,
The way I could tell the diff was you see how the nipple sticks out a little.
For the 'heavier ones' the nipple barely sticks out. And that whole area is amost flush with the base.

The 'lighter' ones, have that base pushed back some so you can see the nipple poking out.

$17?
Damn boy where you shoppin?

Hey Brad, holler at me if you decide to get the lighter versions.
I'm going to need a set when I rebuild the cam towers with new lifters etc.
Thanks man.

Titanium retainers.
If you've got a list of parts, that'd be great.
You could always PM the list if it's too much to post it up on the thread.

I'll check it out this weekend and my purchase the lifters also.
Thanks for the links.

yeah rock auto is the best.

the only place ive seen advertise titanium retainers in the stock 2.4 fashion was JBP. but, since you guys are talking about the 2.3L lifters, then im not sure where you could track down 2.3L titanium retainers.

when i do my valve train, im just using fresh stock stuff. i thought about the 2.3L springs, but then i have to mod the cam tower for the 2.3L lifter. ive been told the 95 2.3L springs is cone shaped like the 96+ springs, but in all my searching the part number comes up the same as the pre-94 springs.

so i think (unless i can find those conical 95 2.3L springs) that im going all stock 96+ valvetrain when i do my cams. im not really planing on this thing ever seeing over 7000+rpm, so i dont think it will be an issue.

^^ thanks chris.

was talking with paul and he said the 95 springs where the conical 2.3L ones with a bit more spring pressure than the 2.4L ones. said he found them when he was working at napa (i think).

Not to thread jack but is the only reason your boring out the 2.4 (33mm) cam towers to the 35mm lifters is so you can run 2.3 springs and retainers? There by you can run higher RPMs,say 72-7400 versus 68-6900 with 2.4 spring/retainers.

The reason I ask is I'm thinking about going ahead and switching from "secret cams" to my HO cams but if my math and research is right any thing above 7k is going to push the turbine shaft speeds on my gt30r close to the limit. So I was going to clearance my 2.4 cam towers to make way for the HO cam lobes and run my 2.4 lifters and springs since I have a few hours in shimming and machining to get them all within tolerance.
