new muffler

Hi all,
I am looking to replace the aftermarket muffler on my cavalier. Can anyone recommend a quiet muffler but still includes the polished crome look?

I put a thrush california turbo muffler on mine. It has a low growl when at a stand still. You can get this muffler at any Advance Auto stores. As for the tip, i just had the muffler guy put me a tip on there. The muffler is right in the middle sound wise. Its not to loud but its not to quiet.

It really depends on your definition of "quiet", however, there are 3 good choices I know of:
1. The largest oval Magnaflow you can get
2. A Dynomax Super Turbo (as big as you can get)
3. or lastly a Walker muffler

Bascially, in all 3 cases, the muffler with the largest dimensions is your best bet. Perhaps you should consider putting in a 22" or larger resonator, that tends to quiet things down a lot, I know my 22" long Magnaflow resonator does a great job of keeping things civil

I agree on the Super Turbo, i have a 14" one with a 18" resonator and 2 1/4" piping and its not too loud, perfect for me.

run straight pipes then....not a hard concept...muffler = quiet, no muffler = loud

Being forced by my dad, who went to move it one morning as I slept & couldn't believe how loud the broken system was, I just went the same way with my Double-deuce'd S-truck. After driving with it open after the "cat" for two weeks, I was glad too, but it was too restricted! I mean, sure the throttle response was improved... but the flow was so held back that I found myself needing way more than before. And I could hear the engine laboring just to idle. I'm sure that when the EGR was active, that the dilution was so high I could run 87-octane without trouble (Something I couldn't do before).

That's what happens when you go to a shop that doesn't really do custom work...

So, I had to go back in & get a proper (Meant for 4.3 V-6 instead of the 2.2L I-4) tailpipe installed, because the correct replacement listed was too small (1-7/8" I.D. vs. 2-1/8" I.D.). It's still just as quiet (what I was aiming for) and now it drives like how I remember it: not needing much throttle to get it to move. I think I'll have the extension-tube done next, as that's still the small size replacement part. Maybe even hollow the "cat"... which they insisted be replaced (As it's the law...) even though it's on an exempt model-year vehicle... so it can act like a pressure-wave isolation chamber, which will make the flow think it's seeing the end of the system. That way the parts after that can be there just to reduce the noise & not effect back-pressure so much.

The things I do just to have a comfortable, well-performing (Including in the area for fuel mileage!) truck.

Go beyond the "bolt-on".

basically, any turbo muffler is pretty quiet and cheap. a cherry bomb turbo muffler is about $25 at autozone.

You could also use the LS Sport muffler, which has a polished tip already.

Did I mention I drive a 2000 Lumina now?-----wigm-tuners.org member
