2.0 to 2.8 or 3.1 Swap
Monday, February 09, 2009 9:47 PM
I'm new to the forums and the now proud owner of a very weak 2.0 cylinder Cadillac Cimarron. I'm interested in doing an entire cradle swap with a V6, but really need to know what all is going to be involved with this. I figure that a J-body should be a J-body regardless which is similar to what I normall deal with in the RWD full-framed GM cars. However, I'm new to the FWD platform and making changes.

I certainly appreciate any and all assistance in making this happen!

welcome to the front wheel drive club. first off, the 2.8/3.1 engines from RWD cars are very different from the FWD variants. If you know about the 3500 top end swap for the cast iron 60* engines you know all about that. If you want to put one of these 60* V6 engines in your J-body, it's going to take some work. what might be the most helpful is the sticky in the third gen forum titled "V6 swap." lots of good info there.

Thanks for the information as well as the warm welcome to the group. I am planning on using either of the V6 variants from the FWD and J-body cars. The ONLY FWD engine I would ever use and for an RWD swap would be the NorthStar and that would be a street rod project. Nice thing now though, can get actual RWD Northstars.

Off to 3rd gen now and read to see what I've got for changing and will keep everyone posted on my progress. I meant to do this when I posted, but here's the link to my Cimarron - 1985 Cadillac Cimarron

V6Z24.com has more info on this. More 2nd gen geared forum, but should be very helpful.

hmmm...northstars...me likey.
i looked at those pictures. its a very neat looking car. my idea would be to get a cavalier/sunbird of a similar vintage as a parts car. probably with a salvage title. you know what i'm talking about right. i really don't know if it would just bolt in or it would take more effort. i guess you can find that out by doing it though. also check out www.60degreev6.com its for anything in that engine family and there are a lot of jbody owners with VERY fast cars. i wish i could be more help, but i really don't know much about this swap. if it was a third gen camaro i could give you more info. haha
