swapping out a 2.3 for a 2.4
Wednesday, February 18, 2009 6:06 PM
hey i was wondering if anyone has ever taken out a 95 2.3 motor and replaced it with a 2.4 motor, im pretty sure the ecu would have to be swapped to but i just want to know what all is involved in doing this, i am going to turbo the car within the next few weeks actually the kit is scheduled to arrive at my house tomorrow, but after doing a little research i think it would be a lot easier to turbo a 2.4 that is also obd2 in stead of the 2.3 and the crazy one year only computer they put in the 95's, any advice would be greatly appreciated, thanks

dont think so..since the quad4 is a better engine
not to mention you have the best year car to do a HOquad swap...and that 95 pcm you just put down on....is one of the EASIEST to use for tuning..dont even need hpt
at one time i had my 95 pcm set up so that it connected to my laptop via Blutooth....

Even if you put in a 2.4 it would run off of the 95 ecm. I think the cam sensor and knock sensor are the only 2 sensors that are different but easy to make work. pre 95 2.3 have better oiling systems, better cams, and higher flowing heads, 2.4 have more stroke and a torquier feel. The only thing easier about turboing a 2.4 is the turbo manifolds are cheaper and easier to come by.

hey thanks for the link to that ostrich 2. I still have a few questions, if i get that would i still need all the other equipment i was told i would need like an eraser and a reader and something to write the new data or will this be able to do all of these things. I'm sorry for sounding like a noob but when it comes to this lvl of tuning i guess i am and i want to make sure it gets done right. Also will i have to soder anything or does this just plug in, or does this take the place of my current ecu, sorry again for all the questions

its a plug in..and all you need to run it is a laptop and the tuner program....you can then make all the tunes you want..its basically a replacement for your eprom chip..it looks like this installed

ok that looks simply enough, but isnt the ecu case hard to open, and secondly does the tuner program come with the ostrich or is it something else i need to purchase, is that a pic of ur ecu

I have a 95 Quad and knew NOTHING about this.

it comes with everything you need..all you need to do is get the software onto your laptop and setup...it took me about a week to get it i think??
now dont forget ..as this will change anything in the pcm you want..you still cant properly tune without a wideband 02 sensor..so dont forget to get one..a complete wideband datalogger would be the best.

so will this allow me to change the top speed, or rpm limit ( i wont be doing that until the motor is built properly), also would u recommend getting the wideband from from moates or is there another one u would choose first. and if i dont get the datalogger all i really need is the wideband o2 sensor and i guess it would be good to get a wideband a/f gauge, i have a regular one already

there isnt a wideband that will or will not work with the ostrich...the ostrich is in your pcm..the wide band in no way hooks to it..the ostrich is an emulator or "programer" the wideband goes to a gauge or data logger...and personally i use INNOVATE's LM1 data logger ....but i have a completely differnt set up and i HAD to have the logger to get anywhere with the engine.....which leads me to my next thing...

chris, i CAN send you one of my .bin files if you wanna try it....but i dont think it would do so well on a 2.3 quad...keep in mind im running a 94mm stroke with long header,62mm tb,36lb injectors and w41 cams
you just wanna check out the bin or you really think you could use it ???

so can i just get the wideband O2 sensor and gauge and the ostrich 2 or do u think i really need the LM1 Data logger to be able to tune my car, a 2.3 quad

unless your doing something CRAZY to it i would just get the o2 and gauge....there are LOTS of tunes out there already for the 2.3 that you can use....and the emulator makes it easy to makes other changes as you want them

Displacement is our only difference. I will have a 75 MM TB soon, you have a 4-1 long tube, i have a 4-2-1 long tube.

I think it would be neat to see, on the wide band, how much air I'm moving relative to you.
