ignition help on a 2.4 turbo
Friday, April 24, 2009 10:09 PM
ok so i have had this issue for a month or so now.. a little background. I had my car on a dyno to get it tuned with hptuners and we noticed that on there was a sudden drop in power but then i quickly regained between 4800 and 55 rpms(i believe, i lost the duno sheet when i moved) we tried to correct the drop with changing fuel and everything else but he said that it was dropping because of the actual spark, either not strong enough or something else. I have the 2.2L coil conversion but i was wondering if upgrading to the msd coils would solve this issue or do i need to get a dis-2? currently i have the stcok coils and 7.5mm wires with ngk 7 plugs.

The plugs are ngk tr7's? Gapped at?? Try a set of tr6's gapped from like .027-.035, start higher then gap down as you need. Also check your wires havnt pulled out of the bootts on the ends or anything. Ive noticed problems like these before, been running the 2.2 coil swap n/a, sc'd, and then turbo. I just picked up a set of msd coils and will be getting wires shortly though cause the 2.2 stuff are a bit older.

actually they are tr6's.. it hit the wrong button. and they are gapped at .35 . i was looking at getting new wires and coils but i was trying to fix the issue completely before going back to the dyno to fix the tune.

It won't hurt to run the MSD coils along with the DIS-2 system.
You'll then have a stronger spark and won't have to worry about the smaller gaps or the spark being extinguished from the boost.
That's my only suggestion for a better run on the dyno an the loss of power due to an extinguished spark.
Good luck with it.
