ln2 valve retainers
Monday, April 27, 2009 6:16 PM
i am still looking into the final options and it isnt cheap... but will talking with the other local cavalier racer he mentioned a bmw valve spring retainer. i have done some searching tonite and will be calling the dealership tomorrow but it looks like the 87-94 BMW 750 iL came with a v12 with 7 MM stemmed valves and had a large o.d. retainer, some aftermarkets even look like they offer this to have a dual spring... ill update again hopefully with prices and pics

btw the retainers are titanium, stock!

are you looking both for locks and retainers? I would definitely be down for a set of 8 if you get some, this would take me one step closer to finishing the head.

Some VW engines also use 7mm stems. We were looking at a set for the head I built.

This fight is part of the reason I switched to 11/32" stems. Competition products sent out a flyer a couple of months ago with name brand titanium spring retainers for SBC for $5 each. I've never seen a 7mm retainer at close to that price.

You can usually buy used 7mm Ti nascar retainers on ebay and have them re-cut to your specs for $5 each.

The locks on those are going to be much bigger than the LN2's. Some one had looked into those style retainers and found you need the corresponding locks also. IIRC, the locks on those are the single rectangular groove, while the LN2s use a single bead groove. I would say investigate the 7mm locks for those retainers to be sure.

The installed hight on the 2.2's is 1.71", the 2200's had an installed hight of 1.6". The 2.2L head can be machined down to fit a 1.800" installed hight spring, such as those used on the LS series motors.

what about running teh crane ls series bee hive springs, they are 1.8 installed height and .600 lift, i am only running a .450 cam wouldnt those just drop in but have a little more seat pressure?

Crane didn't have a Beehive spring, but the Comp Cams 26981 is a drop in on the "97 and older LN2. The loss of the .010" installed hight causes a loss of about 3.5lbs of seat pressure, something you'll barely notice.

I've posted this before, but this is a list of Beehive valve springs that would fit the older LN2s, but most require machining the valve seats down .090" to fit the 1.800" installed hight.

GMPP # 12589774 Beehive Style Valve Springs

Standard L76/L92 springs

mad jack what is the installed height for teh stock valve springs
IIRC, the "super 7" locks are almost identical to LN2 locks (very small). I'll have to go through my boxes in the garage sometime and see if I can separate out which style is which.
