Very dissapointing FAQ (MODS PLEASE LOOK HERE)
Sunday, July 05, 2009 8:23 PM
Ok...i have the 3400 in my car, and i thought to my self i should probably have(want) an upgraded fuel pump, so i did some searching around and i stumbled upon this thread in the FAQ
http://www.j-body.org/faq//27/

Well i said HELL YEAH lets do it. so i went and bought the pump and got Darren's help to do this (he did most of it) we get the tank down get the sending unit out follow the directions to get the fuel pump out...got the fuel pump out and then looked at the new pump and said"this doesnt look right" it was compleatly different....the DIY was for a 95-98 fuel pump but it wasnt any indication on this FAQ the year it was for ....soooo I assumed it would work. So long story short i have a low mileage pump now (thanks for that darren) and now darren is using the Blazer pump for his application...ass...lol

So my main reason for posting this is for the mods to go in to that thread and say this is ONLY FOR 95-98 J-BODY's.

Cause I dont want this happening to another do-it-yourselfer. it depressing....but had fun in the end...and a GREAT BBQ DINNER

Darren has pics he should be posting them up in a day or so

oh yeah if you are going to do this modification you need to get a "sock" or a filter for the bottom of the pump just go to any part souce and ask for one from a blazer of ^specified^ year 94 or 95 blazer dont use your old used up black one

thanks

Colin Steele

here is the write up

Upgrading the fuel pump
Need a fuel pump upgrade for that super/turbo/nitrous/whatever and dont
want to spend the big bucks from RK or mantapart or whoever?
No problem, I found any easy, cheaper way to do it when my pump went
up a couple weeks ago. After digging through the books and physically
comparing pumps, I installed myself a nice new direct replacement high
pressure fuel pump.

To obtain one of these excellent pumps go to your local parts store
and ask for a pump for one of the following :

'92-'95 S-10 Blazer with a Vortec 4.3 VIN:W

'89 Firebird 3.8

'97 C-1500 Chevy Pickup with a 4.3 Vortec VIN:W, a 5.0, or a 5.7

The GM part number for this pump is 25163473.

All you need is the pump itself, not the assembly, or the sender,
just the small pump. After you get this pump you'll notice 2 small slightly
curved tabs on the bottom. Cut these off, as flush as possible with the rest
of the bottom, dont worry, just a snip. Now the pump is exactly the same
as whats in the fuel tank. So, drop the tank, remove the assembly, then
follow these directions to get to the pump itself inside the assembly.

Unsnap the bottom 'footpad', its usually black in color.

Remove the fuel level sender arm and swing it out of the way, its held on by the 'footpad' thingy somehow. It might be bolted in or sumthin too, depends on the model.

Carefully pry the 3 tabs on the big bottom round part. Start with the single one on the one side, then the 2 on the other side. That was easiest for me, might be different for you. You'll have to pull of the strainer to get it off.

If you look at the top mount plate(the big plastic round thing-usually white) and you'll see where there are 3 slots that the pump cartridge locks into. Twist the cartridge and slide it down.

You'll probably havta kinda squeeze the pump out of the housing, its in there kinda tight, but it'll come out.

Unplug pump and plug in new pump.

Reassemble in reverse order.

Before putting the pump back into the tank, make sure everything is plugged in and have someone turn the key to the on position and make sure the pump runs, so that you know you did everything right.

The specs for the pumps are as follows:

Stock pump - Free Flows 80psi@28gph (gallons per hour)

Operating Flow - 45psi@20gph

New Pump - Free Flows 100psi@47gph

Operating Flow - 51psi@41gph

You'll still need an aftermarket Fuel Pressure Regulator to take full
advantage of the increased flow. And dont run the pressure over
70 psi at the regulator, since this can cause the fuel injectors to
shut down (trust me on this). I run mine at 56 psi all day long,
works great and I still get decent gas milage when my foot isnt on the floor.

That is what you get for going off info jut from the FAQ. They probably have not been updated since 2004. Do not expect they ever will either.

Racetronix is really the only good way to go for 00+. Walbro has 1/8th tank fuel cut.

I did a quick search and found a few people who did the blazer pump in 00+ j's, theres just a little modding needed. Id like a racetronix but Ive had the blazer pump sitting around forever lol.

You don't really need the pump for the 3400 swap. I was able to push 3400 to a 10.5:1 AFR by maxing out my injectors in batch fire mode. If I changed it to alternating fire letting the fuel pressure stay up some I could probably get it a bit richer. Not that It's something I want to do, but it shows that there is plenty of stock fuel pump to go around.

At either rate though, it is probably a good thing that you found that issue with the FAQ, so that it could be looked at by future modders.

Yeeeee Colin way to pave the way for us! haha.

Don't feel too bad though dude. I just paid $1000 for a new fuel pump+install at the dealership on monday. What a @!#$ price.

Wow you got p'wont by the stealership.... they probably open the cash registers when they see you coming.

Don't buy from MANTAPART!!
There is no easy ways to get HP, no magic box or gizmo... And if you get more hp, there's no way to make your car still behave and sound like a stock one. More hp usually makes your car louder, more vibrations and harder to drive...but still people hope or think maby there's some magic way to have it all, comfort, stock sound and drive.

Not true... if someone wants to update that info for me, I'd be happy to update that part of the FAQ for all to enjoy.

But I can't do it myself, as I've never swapped a fuel pump innards other than building my custom 3800 one.

You can add the how to I made installing the racetronix pump to the FAQ.

He didnt NEED it. But his was starting to go. 230,000km on the original one. So he figured he would upgrade while he was at it so it would be ready for boost when that day comes. Thats why we still ended up swapping in a lower mileage stock unit that I had when the tank was out.
