what is the difference between the LO and the HO? (2.3) I know the HO has the 086 head and different cams but is that all? so yeah i tried searching and im tired and feeling kinda lazy lol so any help would be awesome!
Thanks
David
The 086 came on LOs too. The information is confusing when you read about that but it was the quad head from 90-92 if i remeber correctly. The differences are Intake manifold had larger plenum and beefier runners for the HO, the exhaust manifold was better, It has the 212 duration and .410 lift cams compaired to the LO's 200 duration .375 lift, also the LO had 9.5-1 compression and the HO had 10-1 compression.
so pretty much your saying that with the HO pistons and cams and port and polished intake i could have pretty much the same as the HO with my LO? (95 Z24 5spd BTW)
Eh not so much with a 95. The 95 2.3 was a tansitional year for the Quad. It has the ballance shafts and crappy oiling system of the 2.4. It also has a head thats more designed for torque and low lift. Will the things you mentioned above help your 95 2.3 YES! youd be better off to find a 94 or older LO, port and polish the head, put the HO cams in with HO intake and exhaust manifold. The pistons wont hurt you too much. thatd give you a close to HO pretty stout engine.
haha well hears the other thing i have a 2.4 LD9 that runs good and is just sitting around would it be better to drop that in there? the 2.3 i have has a blown head gasket
Spend the 400-600 bucks and get a 90-92 LG0......
car-part is your FRIEND.

now dont flame me for this but what year/makes/models do the LGO, or the HO years?
if you go to the second page of the secret cam sticky it tells you what engines came in what and the hp ratings...
yeah looked on car part and found a few but i would have to wait to sell my motor ect ect and im pretty much in a bind ive had my cavs a long time and im tired of them just sitting i need a DD (my truck gets a whopping 12 city 15 highway) and something fun to drive
yup. best bet for performance in a 95 is doing an LG0 (ho) swap. you'll instantly gain about 30 hp. if you put the 2.4 in you'd just be at about the same as the 95 2.3 in terms of hp and if you ever wanted to upgrade the ld9 you'd just be using LG0 parts anyway so it stands to reason that an LG0 swap is key.
I'm tired of wasting my time... now I'm breakin' free.
ok cool, now i tried to use car-part but it didnt say if it was the LGO or the LD2 it just says its was from a olds or a GD
it should have an option to input for the engine code...
PFFT secret cams?! pm me if you want a real upgrade.
it just said 2.3 im takin it as in that means its the lgo?
ok... choose option 2.3L 'vin a' then. thats the 'ho' vin code...
PFFT secret cams?! pm me if you want a real upgrade.
ok i did and the only one that came up was a 1989 grand am and the list says it has the LD2? I searched for 1990 olds calias philidelphia
ok LOL try a 91-93 chevy beretta then. it worked for me, i would just link the results (which arent much) but for some reason it just links to the car-part.com home page and not the results page.
PFFT secret cams?! pm me if you want a real upgrade.
nope, nadda, lol just that damn 1989 grand am, but o well looks like ima just put the 2.4 in it for now for a DD then build the 2.3 into a badass motor over time

I'm breaking it down now... I HATE doing this....
LG0 THATS A ZERO!.. 90-94 2.3 Quad-4. 90-92 had the "086" heads .410 lift cams 212* dur.
W41 GM calls Merchandised High Out Put Package..... 92-93, SOME came with a "086" head, all have .410 cams and 218* dur.
LD2.... Here is where it gets messy.. ALL have .375 lift cams, depending on year, 87-95, heads, intakes, and even oil pumps can be DIFFERENT......
Looking in to it a bit more, the cranks for early LD2's are DIFFERENT, as are the intake's and oil pumps\pans.
IF, And read in to this, I was putting a LG0\LD2\W41 in to a 95 Z24 I would do my damnedest to find a 91-92 GTZ\ , G\A GT, or a Calais......
AND TAKE THE DAMN TRANNY TOO!

95's have .365 lift cams and according to the faq on quad4 forums the 87-88 LD2s (the ones with the tubular aluminum intakes) came with cams with 212 duration and .340 intake/.350 exhaust lift.
Not trying to say you dont know your stuff, just been doing a lot of reading lately and came across this.
No your right.
Typed that up at work today.... No excuse though.

personally i dont classify a 95 2.3 an 'ld2' its to confusing. to me its just that, a 95 2.3.
and chris i hope you werent directing the EL GEE ZERO argument towards me?!!? LOL i knew it was zero.
PFFT secret cams?! pm me if you want a real upgrade.
No, you typed "0" in...
Ya.... but TECHNICALLY it is a Vin "D" LD2.....
just saying...
