Does anyone know if there is a difference between the ecotec's in an 03 Cavalier and a newer Solstice? If so, what are those difference and would an Solstice ecotec fit in a my 03 Cavalier? Reason for my asking is, I plan on building a monster boosted ecotec for my Cavalier and sooner or later want to upgrade to the Sky and put that motor in the Sky?
Cavalier is an L61. Solstice/Sky is a 2.4 LSJ. The boosted Solstice/Sky is a 2.0 LSJ. The 2.4 also came in the CobaltSS non supercharged, G5GT, and one of the Ion models. I believe the 2.0 CobaltSS supercharged is the same motor as the 2.0 in the Solstice/Sky except they came turbo. G5 didnt come with the 2.0 boosted motor.
Yours comes ith 140hp. The 2.4 eco comes with 180hp. 2.0 Supercharged is 200hp. 2.0 turbo I think was 260hp. As I recall, not too much is interchangeable. Your planning on swapping the L61 into (when you upgrade) a Solstice/Sky? Dumb. Sell off your "built" L61 at the time, and build the LSJ.
I could be wrong somewhere here people. Im not an ecotec person. Just want to back myself up.
Thanks for the info. I will just build the LSJ instead of the L61 and when I get it done just sell my cav for a sky.

no.
the 2.4 is the
LE5... 165hp with vvt 88mm bore x 99mm stroke
the 2.0 SIDI (Spark Ignited Direct Injected) turbo is the
LNF... 260hp with vvt 86mm bore x 86mm stroke
the 2.0 supercharged engine is the
LSJ... 205hp 86mm bore x 86mm stroke
the 2.2 in the cav is the
L61... 140hp 86mm bore 94.6mm stroke
an engine that will work in the cavalier won't work in the solstice electronics wise. the reluctor rings are different. the early 2.2s cannot swap the ring since it is cast onto the crankshaft, amongst other problems.
it is possible, but wouldn't be easy.
also, the 2.2 blocks lack the holes required for the solstice motor mounts.. so you'd have to drill and tap them yourself.
pick a car, and build the engine. to switch an engine from one car to the other would be a pain in the ass. If it makes any difference, the L61 seems to have a slightly larger aftermarket.
AH YES, forgot the 2.4 was the LE5. Didnt know about the LNF. Thanks for the correction Paul!
you're going about it all wrong...you have to put in a much better engine...the 2.2 ohv. WAY SUPERIOR!...right?
listen to dat cwazy skwirl.. he's got knowledges in his pockets
seriously, what he said is spot on for what you need to know. in addition to that, you got mounts on the newer Ecotecs that your Cavalier doesn't have spots for, like the K frame for example. also, if I remember correctly, they all got electronic throttle whereas the L61 has the standard cable.. dunno how'd you go about remedying that
