Cavalier shuts off when slowing down
Thursday, September 17, 2009 6:12 PM
My car recently wouldn't start. So I replace the battery and all is well again. But recently, when I am slowing down and in an idle position the car feels like it is about to shut off and dying and sometimes it does die. What is this, please help! I've heard it's an o2 sensor, if I got one how hard are they to replace? Thank you!

Mine did the same thing last year and somewhere i saw that there is a problem with the stock tune that causes it. I had the ECU reflashed in the spring with GM's S/C tune and the car stopped doing it.

I had done some bolt ons to my Dodge Daytona and it would die when I slowed down.
It is just the computer not knowing the optimum idle point.
Or at least the program was the same and yet the flow rate of the engine changed.

So, I just reset the computer and had it relearn the idle and it was fine thereafter.

You need to disconnect positive lead on battery for a few minutes.
Reconnect and turn car on.
Let idle for a few minutes and dont touch the gas.
Shut off and then it is done.

thanks for the post Mike. i read exactly what you posted on a website before you posted it, and it worked great. my car runs perfect now. i also disconnected the ICM fuse in the engine, so I am not sure if it was that along with it, but it worked. thanks!

My car did this in the summer because the nipple on my map sensor had cracked and there was vacume leak.
