Wednesday, August 26, 2009 3:30 PM
hello, i have a question about something that hasbeen irking my nerve. i recently installed a obx header, and when i start up or rev the engine it makes a annoying clicking noise. I dont know if its the header or the engine. its kinda making me mad

do you have polyurethane engine/trans mounts? if not, i'd suspect if you got them the issue would go away. otherwise, sounds like a loose fastener.

The header won't make the engine vibrate more. But, the clicking sound could be an exhaust leak (since you just installed the header). Your profile is empty, so I don't know what car or engine you have. It it's a 2.4, early models have EGR, later ones don't, and the gaskets are different.

its a 2.2 ohv. its a automatic. Thats the thing it comes from the engine, not from anywhere else. it may be due to the gaskets i suppose, the way the header was made it didnt sit flush against the engine. what would be a good sealant?

IIRC there's a little lip on the block or head you need to remove to get it to sit flush. What year engine is this?

Its stainless steel it will do that.

it has something to do with the heat expanding the metal and it ticks.. it probabley also ticks when you shut the car off and its cooling down right?

Since my header and exhaust install (tsudo) my car has been clicking like CRAZY! it's almost perfectily timed as soon as i shut off the car, then it slows down, but it doesn't stop till about an hour after the car has been shut off. Sometimes at a stop light i can hear it too. I've been told that it is just my exhaust settling in, but it's been over a month and the ticking is till there. If I kick my muffler, the sound stops for a second, but picks back up right away.

I Guess I just have to live with this ticking time bomb!

Well kicking your muffler actually might cause secondary sound resonation cancelling out the ticking but I won't get into that. Honestly I would check your lifters they might need to be adjusted the stock header is supposed to aid in sound suppression so the new header might have increased the sound. Seen it before worth.a shot.

lifters really? even though the metallic clicking occurs when the car is off?

I think you are thinking of a differnt type of clicking. It's a hollow metallic sound. but it keeps its own time

Month joe with the lifters I was referring to the op, in your situation I have no idea I've heard cars click for a month and then stop when the metal settles. Some say they don't even get that, I know I didn't.

that's the general idea i've had so far. It's just the metal settling in . I just hope it doesn't last forever
