im thinking about having the head shaved in my 98 z24 but idk how much i can shave it i looked quick but i dont have much time to poke around on the computer
usually .020 is considered as far as you should go.
do you need it shaved? is it warped? if not... just get a few thousandths taken off. no need to get crazy.
I must confess... I feel like a monster!
If I remember correctly, its .010-.015.

i shaved .020 off and put 15k miles on the head with no problems
Shouldn't the machine shop know how much can safely be taken off a head?

probly wants to do it to raise comp ratio...
If you take to much off you might have some potential timing set issues.
....
AnyOne think about what it does to cam timing?
....

What exactly would it do to the timing? I honestly would like a detailed explanaition with a 200 word essay due tomorrow. hehhehe jk I'd suspect that it would retard the timing by pulling the crank backwards a degree or so. So it might help with torque possibly. But at the same time if you got a head gasket that were at least the amount that you removed from the head I think you'd be fine. Say the stock thickness is .030 . So if you shave .20 you'd need a .050 head gasket to keep the stock distance from your pistons to valves. You 'd still achieve a higher rate of compression becuase you are making the chambers smaller. My head was shaved .021 I had a .054 cometic gasket. I had no problems till I had valve float.
i want to do it to raise comp its cheap to do plus i get a shop discount. im rebuilding my bottom end because i was being stupid and messed something up and i figure while i have it apart y not
im thinking flat top pistons and shave the head a little i dont think i would have any problems but i am new to the whole building a motor thing
The shop should know how much you can take off safely.. The timing probably isn't going to move enough for you to notice.. 0.20 off the head would only move the timing like a 1/4 of a tooth.. if that.

what head do you actually have ogre?
if you have a newer one and you wanna up the compression hunt down an older 96-98 head. they have a triangular protrusion that sticks down into the combustion chamber that the 99-02's do not have. this will help out you're compression.
also, if you have no yet considered sivalves.com (can get through karo at carcustoms.net) stainless steel valves you should. they have more a flat face to them then stock and also up the compression a little bit. and lastly, get the flat top 99-02 pistons, unless you are going with forged in which case but if you are doing that you might as well just get the domed pistons and bore that bitch out to .060.
if i were you i would say do this:
ported 96-98 head decked .010.
ss valves.
cometic .030 head gasket.
ho cams.
do this in conjunction with a good tune and hold on to you're seat.

i got the 98 head which i was thinking shave it .015 if i was feeling frisky that day and doing the 99-02 pistons i want to do a tune but idk what to tune it with i cant find anyone near me with hpt i was told to go with a tantrix cable and find a program for it but that is coming from my buddy with a subaru so idk if i could use something like that i havent looked in to it
and while im doing all this im going to replace things like oil pump timing chain things like that
You could always go stand alone engine management like a megasquirt, cost about the same as hp tuners, but if you have emissions in your state then that wouldn't technically be street legal.

i live in iowa so i can do about whatever i want and the cops in my town dont know @!#$ 9 out of 10 cars in this town have illegal something on their car
the only problem with tuning is i dont have much experience at it we did a street tune on a eclipse once but in my opinion it wasent as good as it could of been so im looking for something simple and any tips you guys got for me would be great
it seems like nobody around here has hpt and idk how important a tune would b with this build im in north east iowa and the closest i found was a few hours away

As far as timing issues on quad4forums in one of the stickies named somthing like finally figured out my cam timing he tested a .030 shaved head andIt didnt affect timing. Not that it will be identical on the 2.4 but close. And im not saying i would do it...just that it was shown to not affect timing.
your on the other side of the state but once i get my car going would you b interested in trying to tune my car i dont have any problem with driving anywhere i dont think my car would have any problem driving without a tune with these minor mods
