Methanol Injection

Does anyone have insight on methanol/water(mix of 49% methanol and 51% water) injection? Specifically, I was looking here: http://www.snowperformance.net/ Could be worthless but I just don't know. I have a 2001 cavalier with the 2200. Not much done to it: intake, exhaust. I hear these things aren't too good for aluminum heads. I also hear they don't really do much unless they are PERFECTLY dialed in to your engine. Seems like it could be more useful in a forced induction application, but obviously I'm not going that route. Any insight is appreciated. Thanks in advance.

I would not do it without tuning it. I use meth injection on my supercharged cavy. Works great! Always wanted to try it on my car when it was N/A, but it would require tuning. Not sure how much of a difference it would give.

water/meth injection is used to cool intake charge when it has been heated excessively by forced induction, or to stave off knock on super high comp builds by increasing octane.

If you don't have excessively hot intake charge or more compression ratio than pump gas can handle, you're probably gonna wish you spent the money elsewhere.

I agree with what he said.

From reading elsewhere, that's kinda what I gathered about this stuff. Thanks guys!

Hey guys! First post!

Actually,

You can run a lot more timing with meth injection (as well as higher compression); and the horsepower increases from the advanced ignition timing alone can be pretty significant, and worth the money. Like previously mentioned, however, you need a means of tuning it. Otherwise you should spend your money on something else.

It is not nearly as common on NA motors, but it is still effective. Look around online for NA meth injection.

I have a 2200 with intake, exhaust, port and polished head and throttle body. I plan on getting the head milled to run 93 octane, and hitting it with some meth - so I can run more timing.

bingo, the gains you would receive would be minimal compared to a forced induction aplication. However meth does have a place in the NA realm but it's gota be done right or elese youll be doing nothing but raising the octane level.

more timing does not always mean more power, only in the case where the timing is severly limited by knock. I just read a case of an eco running 30* in the bottom right of the spark map when stock is 22-ish, on pump gas without knock being a big factor

You would have to have an extreme duty NA motor and no access to race gas to make it worth while. That's just my opinion.

Cliff notes: think of meth injection as a relatively cheap alternative to running race gas 24/7

That is true, but methanol has different burn characteristics when compared to gasoline. So in general, you can make more power than when on gasoline alone (still talking NA).

I would like to try it, just to say I did. I plan on putting the kit together myself, so I am only looking a spending around 180 bucks. I am getting HP Tuners and a wideband as well. So I will see how much of a difference it makes. If I made 5 or 10 horsepower, it would be worth it to me.

To the OP- I have read several times that a 49/51 mix gives 5-15% on N/A engines just bolting them on with no tuning (I'd expect closer to 5. It still cools the incoming air, just not nearly as much since it hasn't been heated from compressing it.

Wesley- What components are you using that you can get a system for $180? I couldn't find a cheap kit for less than $250.
