Twin Cam question
Wednesday, November 18, 2009 7:10 AM
Got a question for you guys. I drive a 2000 GA. 2.4l TC with an F23 tranny. I’m posting here as jbody has a lot more experience with that set up.
I am getting a noise when shifting into 2nd and 3rd gear. At first I thought the clutch. Almost sounds like a quiet grind. But after driving for 2 weeks I am not sure, thinking now it could be the SC. Almost like a blow off as the noise only happens when I’m getting on it.
So, 2 questions. My SC is now over 45000 miles, is it wearing/worn out? 2nd, how about my clutch? It has 60000 miles on it. Spec stage 2. So far I have only noticed noise, NO drivability issues at all. And this is my first SC setup so no experience and the clutch is still grabbing very well.
Any insight or thoughts would be greatly appreciated. She is still in great shape but I think I may need to replace some of those parts.
Thanks for looking.

Craig

The Idler Bearings can wear out....

Also, have you changed the oil on it (the blower)?

give me a call some time at work.

The clutch doesnt create the grind. It could be the synchros. Or you are low on clutch fluid and your not fully disengaging your clutch.

If yous supercharger is making noise, you can hear it just by reving it up. Get under the hood and yank on that throttle cable, locate what you hear...

Thanks for the reply guys. Went out for lunch today and checked my maintenance log. I was wrong about the clutch, only 25000 on it. (Forgot about my POS centerforce going out). Syncros could be as they are original to the tranny. almost 80000 on the Getreg. But some woman (I'm being kind) cut me off, had to get on the brakes hard. Got pissed and threw a rev. Heard the noise and not shifting.

Taesche, I have not changed the oil or even checked for slop at the pulley. Good call and should be changed anyway. Will give me a chance to check the bearing. Would you suggest OEM bearing or those poly ones from Arizona (I think I read about some company out there). Suppose to be lifetime on the Grand Prix's. Probably will give you a call to get oil and new caps. I appreciate the offer. BTW, I lost all my data on my phone so I may not have your number unless you PM'ed me. Have to check out my PM's

I will post to update when I get it fixed. Hope it's that easy.

Also..... listen really carefully and make sure it doesnt sound any different when the clutch is press in rather then out.... along with synchro issues, Isuzu tranny's can tent to have TOB issues..

I've been through 3 synchros and 1 TOB / Slave cylinder..... I hate my transmission...

Also.... if it does it at a certain rpm... it could just be something vibrating under the hood (or somewhere) making a grinding sound.... my car does that sometimes but I havnt located the source yet (but I can telll thats what it is)

Just a few things to think about if what your doing doesnt get rid of it.

I found the source of the noise. Kinda feel embarrassed. It is the heat shield vibrating, either that or a hole in the resonater. been thinking about what exhaust I want now. hummmm. I don't feel like the trannie's gonna fall out now. Thanks for all the input and advice.
