Hey guys, I know this isn't the kind of swap most people would be doing, but it is what I have intentions of doing. I currently have a 95 Sunfire 2.2, and just recently bought a 96 Sunfire GT body(minus the 2.4 engine/tranny). I know the more simple thing to do would be find a 2.4 engine/tranny and put that into the recently bought one. But my wife wants to put the engine in the new one, it has more options like the moon-roof, power windows, trunk popper, foglights and so on...........I DON'T NEED TO BE FLAMED FOR WHY WOULD I WANT TO DO THIS, LIKE:
YOU WILL GET NO POWER GAINS(i know this)
YOU WILL HAVE TO CHANGE SOME THING(i know this too)
WHY NOT GO FIND A 2.4 ENGINE/TRANNY(i could do this, but i have an engine and tranny already)
I just want a CONS list of why I would NOT want to do this, and if there are to many cons, i might not.
My question is, what would all of this consist of? I know somebody mentioned in the chatroom that gauges would need to be swapped for the wiring is different, and some mounts would need to be changed. We originally planned on fixing her car up(the back quarter panel is smashed up, and has some dents and dings and needs painted, and we got a good deal on this car for $150 and it is in good shape body wise besides the trunk lid.
She thinks it would be easy to go with the swapping of the 2.2 into the 2.4 and making all the changes, compared to all the body work, which is usually expensive, involved in the one she has now.
Also, how do you repair a moon roof, the one on the new one is leaking. You can put your finger underneath of the moonroof. Silicone of some kind? I have no experience with moonroofs or sunroofs, I had an escort ZX2 once, but the moonroof never had issues.
I will also have some wheels for sale pretty soon, I believe they are the wheels that were for the 96 GT, they come with the car, we don't want them, I just have to get some pics and get them cleaned up. Let me know if there is any interest in those, and I will post up a thread quickly, I am close to Cincy, OH.
Thanks guys. any help appreciated.
OK here we go...
I know you dont want to hear this..... but your stupid if you do this (not meant as an insult)
First of all... you GF is terribly wrong.... it's MUCH more work and a bit more money to but the LN2 from your 95 into your 96 GT then to put the correct engine in there. (forget the body work on the old one but yes that would prob still cost more)
It would be cheaper and much easier to just find a LD9 (2.4) engine and tranny out of something like a grand am and put in it.
Doing a motor swap like that, your just not going to need to replace wiring, your gunna have so saw off an re weld motor and trans mounts, run a different ECU, and depending on if both cars are manuals or automatics, theres a decent list of parts that need to be swapped there too, its gunna be a royal pain.... if your gunna go to all that work you'de be better off to find a L61 (ecotec) and put in there. It would be about the same amount of work. Its not a direct swap at all like on older cars or Honda's.
As for the sunroof.... try replacing the rubber seal.
What years of Grand Am 2.4 any? And are there any different cars with the same 2.4 in it? I knot the grand prix's are 6 and 8 cylinders.
there is the 2.4 in sunfire GT/some SE, Grandam, Alero, Cavalier Z24....there might be more but your better off just staying with 2.4 more power, 2.2 coil swap will help with MPG, all in all better motor, you could go ECO, but who wants that? lol
"As I lay rubber down the street, I pray for traction I can keep, but if I spin and begin to slide, please dear God protect my ride." -Amen
Do you know what years of those models? I figured I would just look for a 2.4 out of a 04' Sunfire, but they appear to be different from what I found.
04 sunfire has a 2.2 ecotec in it, completely different motor.
2.4's came in a lot of GM small cars. cavaliers, sunfires, grand ams, aleros, malibus, and cutlass i believe.
Check out my build thread!
Would swapping one of the V6 engines into it be difficult, of course things would have to be changed, but on a horrid scale? Or just some smaller reasonable things?
I am being told over on j-body.com that any 96-98 sunfire 2.4 will work. Is this just 96-98 sunfires? What years of the cavaliers, sunfires, grand ams, aleros, malibus and cutlasses will work, only 96-98? Or different years?
Are these all of the ones that will directly bolt in? Or just the 96-98 models of these cars? I figured some might possibly be the 2.4, but be the Ecotec 2.4
* 1996-2002 Chevrolet Cavalier Z24
* 1996-2001 Pontiac Sunfire GT & SE
* 1996-2001 Pontiac Grand Am
* 1996-1998 Oldsmobile Achieva
* 1999-2001 Oldsmobile Alero
* 1997-1999 Chevrolet Malibu
* 1997-1999 Buick Skylark
I cant remember the exact year... but by 2000 (I think the change happened in 99) the 2.4 engine changed just enough the make a swap more difficult (different injectors and some other things)
Basically a GM 2.4 (LD9) engine from model year 96 to 98 will work just fine and be a direct replacement.... it doesn't matter what car its out of.... its the same engine regardless...
Also... make sure you dont accidentally buy a 1995 2.3L engine... it wont be compatible with your harness either..... although some people put those in there on purpose because they have more power, its just more work and it sound like your not looking for a custom engine swap when it comes down to it.
