getting rid of the rice sound.
Monday, November 30, 2009 3:47 PM
I have a 1997 sunfire 2.2 with a 5 speed that when i bought it...had a 3a "racing" muffler on it.Pretty much a rice pipe.I took it off for a while but it was too loud,so it's back on,but i hate the rice sound.

I've been thinking about getting a hi flo cat or punching mine out.with 2.25 inch piping all the way back with a glass pack.Think it will get rid of the rice pipe sound?

Depends what you call "rice". If it sounds like bees in a can, a cat, resonator, and a muffler should get rid of that.

Rice is not a sound. Next you have a 2.2 OHV N/A car. Hard to make them sound good. Turbo it and put 3 inch exhaust no cats and it will sound great.

punching out the cat will make it worse.

when will people realize that the way an engine ultimately "sounds" isn't because of the exhaust but because of the engine you're working with?

My Honda beater I had this summer sounded nice with one of those "rice" mufflers. Until I was speed shifting it and broke it off.

I would just find a stock exhaust and put it on. Not much exhaust sound then. And I would go so far as to say that as far as 4 bangers go, the 2.2 OHV actually sounds decent. It's a little droney on the highway, but at least it has a deeper purr than the high pitched whine of so many 4 cylinders.

I agree with the cat, resonator, muffler comment. I'm not sure what sound your expecting, but that won't give you the tin can bumble bee noises that just a muffler does.

Everyone has a different opinion on a ricey sound. Personally i like a fart can that doesnt sound like bees. I like a fart can to sound like, well i fart lol. To each their own though. The OP needs to get on youtube and listen to fly-bys and decide that way.

I would search Youtube first, so many exhaust sample videos for you to listen too before dedicating to what sounds good on paper.

My wife's 2003 Ecotec 2.2 liter Sunfire:
* 2 1/4 inch in and dual 2 inch out muffler Trans Am muffler
* 2 1/4 piping to a very long 2 1/4 inch resonator
* 2 1/4 inch catalytic converter
* an AEM true cold air intake NOPI edition
* 8 gauge ground wire kit
* Toyz front strut brace
* Russell stainless steel brake lines all around.

Run straight pipe. I have stock piping. just cut the muffler and welded a tip on. sounds good. with a louder exhaust, you feel more in sync with your engine. you can hear when she doesnt like the way you are shifting, and when you get it just right, she MOANS, oh she moans.

Honestly, its true about the engines tho... i have the LD9, my friend has a 2200... he simply cant get his to sound like my 2.25, 18" res and magnaflow no matter what he does, and mine sounds like pure sex haha

Start with 2.5" cat back pipe from custom tubes inc. choose at least an 18" resonator, longer is better, and add the muffler of your choice. If you want mellow, i suggest dynomax super turbo, thrush, or walker quiet flow. Stay away from the straight through type mufflers if you want it mellow. Unless you're a pro with a welder, have a reputable shop install it for you. I learned the hard way when it comes to custom cat backs lol

Punching the cat or swiching to a high flow will make it louder, but a decent resonator and muffler selection will quiet it down.

I cant link to it because my work has "you tube" blocked.
But search "p4286arc" thats me, and watch my "qtp electronic cut out" video.
My car sounds so awsome, kinda like a modified SRT-4 Neon, at least I think so.

The exhaust consists of a custom log style turbo manifold, 2.5" turbo back, inline QTP cut out, inline DNA street series race muffler, and an inline BORLA XR-1 muffler, no resonator or cat.

Feel free to leave a comment.

i have a dynomax super turbo and it's a little bit louder than stock not by much,quiet inside but when you accel it's a little more louder,no popcorn farts pretty smooth.muffler says it flows 525 cfm pretty high flow for quiet type.

Turbos make every exhaust sound better...

Turbo a 2200 and feel the powa....

I really need to get the girlfriend to drive the car so I can get a sound clip...

i have a n1 fart on my 96 cav 2.2l non eco 5 speed and sounded little ricey at first but i picked up a used pacesetter header on ebay and immediatly felt more torque in all gears plus sounds very clean and cackles down after a let off the gas. the rest of my exhaust is stock tubing except for the 3" header downpipe

its not how fast you go its how fast you get there

Don't do it man. Find a buddy to drive your car for you. I let a woman drive my car one time and she ran over a truck tire and ripped off my neons on I-95. I was sleeping at the time and I assumed it was unavoidable but once she told me there was no one in the other lane, I took the keys immediately. Quietest ride from South Carolina to Pennsylvania EVER. haha.

I want to get rid of the bee sounding exhaust.

I cut my muffler and while it sounded cool..when i would shift above 4k it would let out a nice buzzzz like a bee.I'd like to keep it louder than stock but not overly loud.

Trust me, I trust her...Me and her are ASE certified, Compete for who has the most automotive tools, and she regularly puts a high 9 second Nova down the track...So I dont think she'll have a problem getting the cavalier down the road for an exhaust clip.

Lol @ the guys suggesting a turbo as an exhaust mod. Yes it would certainly get the job done (and sound sick), but it's like suggesting using a shot gun instead of a flyswatter for your knat problem lol
