i cant remember and i couldnt find it but will a 99 non ecotec motor work in a 97 2.2 non ecotec car. i know 95 wont work i just cant remember if there is a differentance in the 97- 99 engines.
i found a 99 engine for my brothers car i just need to know if it will work.
thanks for the help.
i see no reason y it would'nt, if there are differences they're likely minor. i think.....someone correct me if i'm wrong.
The engine as far as I have always known are 95-97 and 98 plus. The head on the 98 plus is different than your 97. The intake manifold is different and so s the exhaust although Ive read of people modifying headers to work between the 2. If you took a 97 head and put it on a 98 block you could run it in the car. but it would have like 10.8 to 1 compression which is too much for a daily driver on a push rod engine. Im not sure if you could wire the 98 plus injectors and sensors, to keep the newer head and normal compression, to work with the 97s ecu or not.
well thanks for the help, it turns out that i only can use 96-97 motor.
You could swap a 95 to 97, but not 99. In 98 everything above the block changed (plus the cam and pistons).

It's more than 10.8:1, 10.8 wouldn't be a problem.

I'm not sure where you're going with this, but let's just say there are about a dozen problems in that statement lol.

I only add my input because I have a 95 with a 2000 engine in it, It took some time too figure out all the wires but I still have everything in the car (wiring wise) that came with it stock, I think there were a couple of sensors we had too change but other than that it runs fine everything bolted right up like i said with the exception of some of the wiring..... o and the fuel line has to be redone.
YOu can put a 99 2200 in a 97 2.2OHV car. You can even do it in a 95. I have done this before. The main differences to work with are the injector harness for a 2200 needs to be wired into the wiring harness of the 97. The coil packs are in different locations and you have to move wiring around for that. Exhaust manifolds are different, but use the 99 manifold. If I remember correctly the downpipe off the 97 will still connect to the 99 manifold. It is not bad to do at all. There is some post on this because I have posted the info before.

There were quite a few threads on here saying it is 10.8-1, I previously thought it was like 13-1 but was told by several people here it was 10.8-1...I would like a solid answer to this lol.

I just meant to put in the 98 plus engine things would be different enough you couldnt just throw it in, like possibly high vs low impedance injectors, top mount vs side mount injectors means you cant put the 97s in the 98s setup and im 99percent sure you cant put a 97 intake manifold on a 98 plus.
By all means please correct me if i am wrong...i just started paying attention to the 2.2. So far Ive had good old LD9s. But ive been reading and I have a general knowledge of it but not an expert by far. My next cavy will be a 2.2. I wanna go against the grain n see what I can get out of one.
sounds like you could just drop the 99 2.2 in to the 97, swap over the trans, wiring harness, and ECU, as well as all engine accessories... i dont see the problem...
maybe not on the trans... i dunno if the mounts and bellhousing changed over the years... but the accessories, ecu, and harness for sure.
to the original poster... no J motor before 2002 is an ecotec, so you dont have to say non-ecotec.

.You can do that, but you have to worry about the ECU working with the other items for theft lock. You can run a 2200 off a 2.2OHV ECU and wiring harness.

<--- forgot about theft lock.... thats a pain in the ass...
glad i came across this post, i was looking into purchasing an OBX header for my 98 that is meant for a 96. interesting that the head changed and is not not compatible for the header pipe. many thanks!

That will technically work, as the 96 ports were larger than the 98. Flow might not be ideal though.
