96 2.2 Cylinder Head Questions
Saturday, February 06, 2010 10:36 AM
My friend has a small cylinder head shop next to his house, and I've brought the cylinder head off my 1996 S-truck 2.2 to him to have it checked out. Turns out one of the valve seats is leaking. So he's going to teach me how to do the head and I'm going to do it myself.

When I bought the S10, the motor was in the bed, half torn apart and the cylinder head was off. The engine and the cylinder head is rebuildable but both are missing alot of little things.
My cylinder head has no push rods, no rockers, just springs and valves.

I've been doing some reading around about doing a roller rocker conversion.
I think I'm going to go with the Proform 66915 1.6 ratio rockers and eliminate the guide plates, and the ARP 100-7201 studs.

I'm wondering what sort of springs and pushrods and other little things I will need?

I told my buddy that I was planning on eventually turbocharging the engine and I showed him the V8 roller rocker thread and he had some questions, I can't remember what they were but when I go over their today I will find out and post them up.

Are stainless valves needed? I'm looking to run 5-10 psi, with almost completely rebuilt motor. It will have a redone crank, eagle rods, possibly new pistons, new gaskets, and the head work.
I had asked what could be done to the stock valves to make them flow better, as he doesn't feel that 1mm o/s valves will make much difference, and he suggested back cutting the head of the valve, if I remember right.

Oh, I'm also wondering about what push rods I can use, or would they have to be custom made?

You can use stock pushrods, but aftermarket would be better at higher RPM to help prevent floating. Custom lengths can be ordered from Crane.
You can use stock springs as long as you're on the stock cam.
Stainless valves are recommended, but certainly not needed.
Don't waste your money on rods or that little power. Forged pistons would be a MUCH better investment.

forged pistons! the stock pistons are one of the biggest weak spots on these engines. The rods can handle much more abuse. I should know, I blew one at 100K.

Contact Al's Headers in California. They've got a header that added 15ft-lbs of torque to the peak at the same RPMs that bolts directly in place of the factory exhaust manifold, no-problem.

Go beyond the "bolt-on".

I'm trying to beef up this engine a bit so I can sleep well at night.
I'm doing roller rockers because mine are missing (I didn't dis-assemble the engine, I don't know where the hell half the stuff is)
My friend said that forged pistons require a bit of work to get em to work right, especially in our climate. He said they knock in the winter, but I think he said it was from doing something wrong, I've got to chat further with him.

Do the 98+ have forged pistons?

Two of my rods and crank are toast, and I've found that a set of replacement rods worked out to be about $90-100 a rod, and I should be able to get a set of Eagle Rods for that much.
If I do get a set of stock rods, would shot peening be a good idea? I am not sure if I can find a place to do that.

Isn't Crane gone out of business?

What about the turbo camshaft from IPP?

I have stock rockers, springs, pushrods, and 2 rods from my '96. Just throw me a few bucks for shipping and they're yours. Your money is MUCH better spent on pistons. Depending on the piston alloy, they can "knock" around until the engine has warmed up. Venolias are more likely to knock than Ross, for instance.

98+ is definitely not forged, although they are stronger because of the dish design (but not exactly compatible with the 97- head).

The rods are strong enough; peening is not necessary.

I heard Crane is back now.

"Turbo" grinds aren't worth it IMO. Go big or go home My "turbo" grind is 206/313

Well I think I will be leaving the stock cam.
I'm sort of on the fence with valves. The head is sitting at the shop on the bench for now. I'm a student, and I can't seem to get a job to save my life. Staples didn't hire me. On of the stores here isn't hiring till march and he said I should have a job there.
I won't have the money to pick em up till then, and I don't want the head just sitting around at the shop. If I could at least get the valves cut and stuff I could put it all back together, at least temporary till I start working on the ports.

A reliable boosted engine would be nice, I know they can handle 8-10 psi but I'd like to have some extra insurance as it has to get me to school and back.

I'd also like to get the roller rockers aswell. I just wish you could buy the proforms individually like you can with some other brands. I don't know anyone who would want 8 rockers.

Excuse me while I rob the nearest bank.

Would you ship those parts to Canada OHVNotec? How many miles on them parts?

I wish there was an edit function.
Since I have a 96, (I'd like to convert to a 97 computer but don't know the differences between the two; a 97 computer would give me HPTuners support)
I've been looking at SDS's Extra Injector Controller. They have a supercharged 2002 Xtreme on their site and it put down some nice numbers. However it doesn't give me timing control.
For the same price, I can get a Greddy E-Manage Blue. I'm trying to find out if I can use it with my truck. Maybe somebody has used one on a pre 99 J body? The junkyard said the cavalier computers interchange with the truck ones (it says so on Hollander) as long as it has the same options.

I wouldn't want to do a full stand alone swap. So would a E-Manage work?

Qwik did about 300whp on a stock 2200 bottom end, which uses the same rods as the 97-. 8-10 psi (on a reasonable turbo) would give you about 200whp max. Plenty reliable.

I actually have a brand new set of 8 Proforms/ARP studs in my garage collecting dust as well lol.
I've shipped to Canada before, but it's not fun. I wouldn't have a problem marking it as a "gift" for customs (this time it would actually be pretty true though). Parts had about 75k miles.

There is, you just have to be a premium member.

Stay away from SAFC or e-manage; they're just not worth it. Megasquirt is cheap
Madjack did a 97 ECU conversion IIRC, so he could probably give yoiu info on it.

How much would you want for the proforms w/studs?

I think I may get those rods and stuff from you. I will just have to save my lunch money, hah.
