getting a cyl head done
Monday, February 08, 2010 3:46 PM
a friend of mine said he'd build me a cyl head for my 2200, he's gonna shave it a bit, port & polish, that kind of stuff, anything else i should do while the head is off?

would it be worth it to get stainless valves?

does he have a flow bench? i've never been a fan of someone doing ANY headwork without making sure that the flow is matched across all four cylinders.

What are your REALISTIC goals?

well i'd like to be anywhere for 125-140 hp,, since the car is gonna be a daily driver and i may take it to the strip every now and then, i plan to add a header very soon as well, and the car is going to be dyno-tuned by a sponsor of the car-club im in, and yes he is going to have every thing he will need to do it, he just needs to finish building his garage first lol

With a 2200 and that goal, I wouldn't worry about anything else just becasue the head is out. However, if you want to swap the cam, this would be the best time since you have easy access to the lifters. With a new cam, I'd then recommend the lifter conversion as well.

Stainless valves wouldn't do anything for performance, that I'm aware of.

On a sidenote, if by JBP, you mean Jbody performance, stay far away from them.

Karo at CarCustoms.net has +1 mm oversized valves for the 2200. These are necked down behind the head and are slightly oversized. These won't make any great gains, but will help to support the other work you are doing on the head.

You should let me build your 2200 head, with my LS1 SBC swap.
It would be awesome, but not very cheap!
It could handle all 140hp you would deliver to it!

JBP = scam artists. You can't always expect to get what you pay for, but not always in the same way as RSM, Mantapart, etc.

56mm will probably help. It's easy to find in the junkyard, and almost a direct swap.

The domestic section of the yard down the street is probably a good 10% 2.3's. They were very common for GM during the time period. It doesn't have to be from a J; ANY 2.3 uses that TB.
