To resonate or not to resonate??
Sunday, April 25, 2010 5:43 PM
Friday, i finally was able to get my exhaust put on,here's the specs.
Borla Pro xs muffler 2.25 in/out
Magnaflow cat 2.25
2.25 custom bent pipe from the cat back,and i kept the stock Z tip.
On with some pics.

Brand new from Summit racing.

I see the light

Custom pipe.

Stock Z tip.

Stock tip outside view.

And my sound clip... What do you think? should i put on a resonator?I'm thinking it needs a small one to tone it down a bit.
Thanks for looking.

i think it sounds good bro if anything a header would help calm the rasping down a little.

its not how fast you go its how fast you get there

Header is probably the next thing i do.

i would put a res. just go to auto zone and get a glass pack and use that as a res.

Definitely use a glasspack in-line somewhere; you wont be disappointed.

youll be alot happier with a resonator!
especially if your buying a header soon!

i currently have a header to mag cat to thrush glass back to superturbo muffler, with 2.25" piping, rev it high and it sounds sweet but i don't have any rasp, and throw it one gear higher and it quiets right down.

I originally wanted to put a thrush resonator on,but i figured try this out first and go from there.
So i might buy the thrush.

i just went to advanced auto parts, they had it for the cheapest, it was 19.99 for a 25" Thrush glass pack

First off edit your videos. There is no need for a 4 minute sound clip!

Now to answer your original question. Yes add a resonator. Your car does not sound bad now but it will sound much better with a resonator. Cavaliers always sound raspy so the deeper the sound the better. I really like the magnaflow ones. There is a difference in resonators and the way they sound. It is what I have on my evo and I love it granted turbo exhuast are typically less raspy and loud to start with. I speak from experience here. I used that same Borla muffler on my cav and I liked it. I put in a resonator and it was even better, granted it was turbo too.

Also props on the exhaust. I really like the clean look of the factory tip.

No, you shouldn't. Why? The muffler you're currently using is a resonator by design! Not much point to adding more of one, as it won't really silence the "note" anymore than what you'd hear from a set of zoom-tube'd sidepipes. And it won't fine-tune the sound really either. Better just to get a good turbo-style muffler (The first ones were originally designed to have very low back-pressure!) that has a flow-rate of 2.2cfm@10.5in.hg for every one HP your engine produces and then go add a resonator. Trust me.

Thanks for the comments guys,sorry for the long video....as i have 0 editing skills,so i just upload and go.
To me i think it needs to be toned down just a little bit,so what would be a better choice of resonator over the thrush one?
I think i was going to go with a 22" res.Would a longer/shorter one change the sound note at all?

Usually a testpipe replaces a cat if im not mistaken. I say put in a resonator, especially if you are going to use a header. when I put my catback on it was really deep...but then when i put on my header and high flow cat it got raspy.

No, THAT (a test pipe) is usually just THAT. A pipe.

To resonate!!!

I have a magnaflow resonator, I like it.

yes resonator please. especially if you plan to run a header and catless. I dont know how these motors take to resonators yet but typically the longer the resonator the less rasp and the deeper the note.

For the money, it's hard to beat using a Cherrybomb glass-pack. It' uses a perforated core, much like your Borla muffler, so it won't stifle exhaust-flow. And they sound good, too!

I always add a resonator, as on every car I have had an exhaust added, it made it not as loud and the tone was deeper and cut the rasp.
It seemingly feels more responsive too. Just my opinion though based off at least 4 cars with a before and after getting a resonator comparison.

My wife's 2003 Ecotec 2.2 liter Sunfire:
* 2 1/4 inch in and dual 2 inch out muffler Trans Am muffler
* 2 1/4 piping to a very long 2 1/4 inch resonator
* 2 1/4 inch catalytic converter
* an AEM true cold air intake NOPI edition
* 8 gauge ground wire kit
* Toyz front strut brace
* Russell stainless steel brake lines all around.

resonate i have 2.25 mandrel bent with pacesetter header and magnaflow muffler and above 3500 rpm it gets raspy with i would of had em put a resonator on my setup.

Ok looks like you all helped me make up my mind.
As soon as I can I'll put a resontor on,and I'll post a shorter
video to.

Alrighty,finally got the resonator put on Friday,and earlier today made a shorter sound clip.
Just so you all know,my camera SUCKS,it allows alot of distortion at higher rpm's.
But i bought a 23" cherry bomb glass pack from summit racing,but in person i like the new note it puts out.

Thanks for viewing.
