Possible Engine Swap
Wednesday, May 05, 2010 11:26 PM
Hi,

I know that almost any engine can be swap into any car, experimentation is the key.
Tough i searched every were for this engine swap i have not seen nothing wrote about it.

I also know cost can be high when swapping engine's especialy if there is need to be done extra work to make it "FIT", i would like to ask how much work would it need to swap an MX-6 Engine into a Cavalier z22r 1997 ?

Would it be giving me alot for my money ?
How much work does it involve ?
Woith the work to be done, would it be very expensive ?

Thanks !

Since most people here have little to no knowledge of the MX-6, you'll probably have a hard time finding the answer. Best advice I can give, is to take lots of pics.

yes.

your questions of this manner are very easy to answer simply because you're having to ask them.

what is your reasoning behind dropping in an MX6 motor? they aren't particually fast... At least do something cool like a 93 13B twin turbo Rotory out of an Mazda RX7 or something

They still pack in a nice 197 HP.

A full 67 HP more then the other one, i just want a little more power out of it, nothing to kill myself with.
Before the MX-6 couldn't run no more i tried it out and liked the power it had, so i wanted to put that in my Cavalier Z22r, im not into BIG racing, i have a 9 month old kid and i do not wish to die and have him grow up without a dad but when i feel some one is to slow for me i just put the pedal to the floor and go at it.

Also like to do awsome burnouts

Any ways, Thanks !

which can be obtained quicker, easier, and more reliably with a turbo.

if someone is going slower hjan you and you can't get around them with the factory power, chances are, you don't really need to be in front of them.

nothing is awesome about doing a burnout with a FWD.

yeah that kind of motor swap isn't worth the money unless you see 200 + WHP

Anyone who needs to ask the cost and work in doing an engine swap hasnt done any research at all. The biggest problem I have with posts like this is when people dont understand what work is involved.

I am currently doing the 3800 swap. I researched it for more than 3 years before i started tackling it. I still have a lot of questions for the guys that have done it but I am asking specifics as opposed to how much work is involved. Considering your not even staying inside the GM family your cost is going to be huuuge. Have you even thought about the electronics? The engine is the easy part! Yes it will fit . . . anything can fit . . . have you checked out the cav with a northstar v8 in it?

I am using the L67 with a SC and should be putting down 300 hp to the wheels. So far ive spent around $300 CDN on the whole swap. thats what the engine and trans cost me. i am betting by the time the whole engine is in and running i will have spent around $1k CDN for everything. I am doing as much as I can myself so i dont have any labor costs just parts. By the time im finished i will have maybe 150 hours or more into this swap because im being very carefull and taking a lot of time to do it right. because i am not a mechanic it takes me bit longer sometimes to figure it out.

i have plans to rebuild the engine and trans once everything is running and the wiring is finished. this will be on top of the initial install and I am hoping to keep that in the 2500 range. So all in all my swap will have cost me $3-3500 but i will have an engine that is twice as powerful and probably cost much less than what your going to spend on the mazda engine. my engine will be solid and should run for a very long time once im finished. thats what you want when doing a swap on your daily driver. power + reliability or your gonna be screwed when it dies at walmart and you have to tow it.

make sense?

Whats up people?

Yes there is. The way it grinds the teeth down your differential.

It would be a better investment to buy an Escort and swap the MX6 engine. Its been done without much fuss I think. But still there are better ideas for swaps into escorts too. like turbos.
If you have got a good deal on the motor, sell it for a profit, then buy a better swap for your car, that would be more easily accomplished, and ultimately more realiable.

WOW!!! Ok the new guy getting into this one. For the most part these guys are right, if you are asking very open-ended questions that sound like someone who is way over their head then you must be unless you are trying to fool everyone. With a plasma torch and welders almost anything is possible. I always see it coming down to two key things, money and time.

Am I wrong???

Re: Possible Engine Swap

cavalier + Dealer Rice.... to get some sucker to buy it thinking its not a base model..

so is it funnier that they actually called it that to sell it? or that he still refers to it as such?

ignorance is an excuse..... i mean america voted for obama after all..

I say take that mx6 and drop a tractor engine on it, rip that 2.2 out throw in the 3.8sc and make it a z38r instead. I mean if all we are talking is about a base model no one will care the numbers are wrong.. not like it will be a collector car some day...
