how do you 'throw' a rod bearing?

you either 'throw' a rod or SPIN a rod bearing.

ive honestly never heard of an ECO spinning a rod bearing. what kind of oil were you using? did you run it low?

This isnt the first Eco to spin a rod bearing. Last dealer I was at had one that spun three rod bearings (all looked the same so I assume it happened at the exact same time) and it had all its oil changes done at the dealer. It can happen. I dont know if they ever came to a conclusion as to what caused it but GM had us put a new engine in the car.

Coldnt tell you but it happened at the track. An I use nothing but mobile1. No wasnt low kinda thinking high miles maybe car has 137000 miles on so thats what im going with. Honestly did think about putting an ld9 in but i love my eco.

High mileage wouldn't be the cause.
mine has 180,000 on it and I drive the piss out of it. It still runs like a top! It burns oil but I check the oil often.

maybe be an NA build im a little shocked more people arent saying boost it.

boost it... lol seriously ill never go back..

Re: Threw a rod bearing

I don't have an eco but I would boost it just because of the ability to increase the power if you wanted to down the road. Its pretty cheap and easy to throw a different wastegate spring in.

when you can spank a lot of the times these boosted cars are putting down you'll have the last laugh.

Well yes and no. I'm hoping to run a 13 flat and hopefully 12's so I think that would be a pretty expensive project to make a n/a eco run that but I see what your saying for anything in the 14's or mid to high 13's. I'm talking about more power made easily by a wastegate spring as in 300+ whp. I figure you would spend a lot less to run a 13.0 with a turbo compared to n/a (if anyone on here has ran a 13.0 n/a). It totally depends on your goals. For me spending a lot of money and only getting into the 13's isn't worth it as with a turbo there is much more potential but I get what your saying. Heck I ran a 14.3 with a s/c and a built n/a eco would definately beat that but it didn't cost me much to run that. If you would be happy with low 200whp n/a than I say go for it but for me running almost 200whp it got old in a very short time, this is why I have totally overhauled the motor. To each their own, but a good built turbo motor is greater than a good build n/a motor (this is my opinion and nothing more), as I drag race and the turbo would be the better choice for me.

weather you want to build a good na engine or a good turbo engine, to build means to go all out. cams, rods, pistons, valves, crank, bearings, head work and anything else associated with a build. To do it best you have to spend a lot of money for either set up. To do a turbo build right I wouldnt do anything different then i did for my build with the exception of different compression pistons. Now if your just talking about throwing a turbo on an engine and calling it a day then yeah you will see a big difference. but its longevity will also be a day and night difference. I know one thing for sure when I finnaly do get mine put together and im at the track next to the guy with a turbo. I wont be waiting for spool while I watch him fade into the rear view mirror.

Well I want to go all out I bought a beater today so work on the car will start here real soon. Im going with boost my buddies all talk me into it they said na is a waste of time an money. All my buddies cars are boosted so why not

Well when you rod cap and connecting rod split in half and the bearing gets throw off of the crank and destroys the piston. Thats how you throw a bearing Ive seen it and held the carnage in my hand.

But in all seriousness. Build that bish.

Not sure what you mean, yeah it takes a second or two to spool but I think you'd be hard pressed to run a 12 n/a.

I think thats your best bet if you think you may want a more power someday. I'm looking for 300+whp so n/a would not have done me any good. Almost all my buddies have turboed cars and would never go n/a again.

my turbo lag = the half second you thought you had me

or on a more realistic note,
Also I am not sure what you know about turbo lag, but you may have been misinformed. In regards to my engine (which isn't even that good to be honest) many people who are making 250-350whp are seeing full boost by 3300-4500rpm. Now you tell me where in a drag race you are going to be below those rpms. Because the only place I can think of is when I stage.

If you are using slicks or drag radials, which anyone making that that sort of power in FWD should be, you will be above those rpms when you launch. So, the only place you get experience my turbo lag is when I stage and the burnout box.

Brodycog, what do you plan on running in the quarter? On what tires? With what power?

motor is still in process of being built. have all but one main ingrediant waiting on a rod. otherwise im hoping to be pushing upwards of 260 whp. and later add a shot of nitrous. I would like to have everything finnished this summer but with the way the finances are going rihgt now it looks like it wont be finnished till next spring. but yeah I plan on making it an all out track car.
