flywheels

Hey guys I am in the process of an Ecotec engine build & am looking to flywheel selection but I was told that the lightweight flywheel was not the way to go. I am curious what are most of you guys running. I will be bossted but i would love to know what both N/A & boosted guys are using. Thanks

the sheer amount of acceleration improvement alone should make the decision easy.

i have driven plenty of aluminum flywheel cars, one of them even being an LT1 vette, they are awesome.

i know 2.4's love them, at least the ones i have driven do.

My car with the s/c seemed to like the lightweight flywheel, hopefully it will stay like that with the turbo. I like how it revs a little more free.

In fact i went my best times with a stock pressure plate and an alum flywheel

and i have a SPEC Alum flywheel for sale, with an extra steel ring

call me 989-798-0518 for details and price

HOWEVER

the 2.4 hates idling with one, and will not idle with the AC on with one... You lose inertia with the lightweight flywheel and sometimes the computer cannot keep up, and you stall out.

Daily driving is not the most fun.

I have the RK Sport Flywheel (which was made for RK Sport by Fidanza)

$750 later........ you are right Matt, but it works great once the clutch is broken in, and mine idles very nicely.

I do not have a 2.4, but I choose not to use one in my turbo build.

What are the goals of you project? e.g. hp? street, strip autox?

I don't have a/c anymore but I've never had an issue with stalling and I daily drive my car. Had over 30,000kms on the car with the flywheel and I can't say I ever remember it stalling due to the flywheel (maybe did because my car was running rediculously rich).

i also reduced 3 lbs off the crank shaft and removed the balance shafts... so there really isn't any inertia... i'm surprised clyde hasn't chimed in yet

the stalling thing really all depends on how light the flywheel is. from what i've heard anything in the 9-11lb area is a decent choice for daily driven cars. light enough to give a decent increase but not too light as to make the car stall out every time you stop. a buddy of mine ran an 8lb in his car a few years back and he always had some stalling issues. i can't wait to drive my car again and see how my new 11lb Aasco flywheel feels.

I think the spec flywheel I have weighed 7 or 8lbs (can't remember which it was) and I'm pretty sure stock was 13lbs.

stock steel flywheels are around 20 something pounds if i remember correctly

Hmmm, mine was weighed on a digital scale when they pulled it off the car to intall the spec one and it weighed 14lbs on the button. Weird.

well i have no idea how much the RK flywheel weighs

Re: flywheels

I had a fidanza aluminum one on my LN2 cavi and loved it. I had a spec aluminum one on the eco and I liked it alot with the blower however once I was tuned on a fake 2.5 bar it would randomly want to stall. So you could either blip the gas a hair and you would be good or it would stall. When the eco was n/a i had no issue with stalling even with the ac on. I actually put the stocker back on when I replaced my slave to see it the random stalling with the fake 2.5 bar goes away.

Otherwise I fulley endorse aluminum flywheels I've had nothing but good luck with them aslong as your not faking a 2 bar with your car I'd say you will be fine. I have my spec aluminum one laying around so I might sell it if your interested shoot me a pm I'd let it go for 150+ shipping. it's got roughly 15-18k miles on it.

I have driven Matt's car with the Spec flywheel and the the car revs up quite fast (under no load)... like way faster than any car I have ever been in and it's also extremely responsive when driving. If you are going from stock weight it is noticeably different, even for someone who rarely drove the car. If you were driving it on a daily basis (e.g. the owner) it would be like night and day.

Sorry, I saw Eco and skipped it till I accidentially clicked it.

Happened at 4500 RPM and is the reason I will never use an aluminum flywheel again.

^^^ clyde, thats the damn worthless fidanza flywheel. i think you should try a different brand before you write them off completely.

kyle- i have the same rk flywheel you have and mine weighs 8.2 pounds. my gutted rocket parts flywheel weighs 7.1.

What's up with the two large holes across from each other towards the center of the flywheel??? I have a Fidanza flywheel and mine doesn't have those.

BTW, I've had my Fidanza for over three years and never have had any problems with it.

its hit or miss. fidanza claims there was a bad batch in the beginning sales.

there are other options though....

spec, aasco, rocket parts (gutted stocker)
