I just realized my muffler (stock) is damaged and will need replacement, I thought of just going to my local muffler shop and have them weld a new one on. but now I'm wondering how an aftermarket (performance, better sounding) muffler would go with stock piping. I don't really know what my choices are, I know flowmaster makes the 60 series for 4 bangers, but can someone recommend a muffler that will go fine with stock piping. I'm not interested in a whole exhaust system, i just plan on removing the old damaged muffler and replacing it with something else. Or can someone tell me if this is just a bad idea that will lead to terrible sound and performance.
any help/suggestions are appreciated
thank you
a cat back for me was cheaper then having them weld a muffler on for me and sounds much better. but if all you want is a muffler go down there have them take a look at it and see what your options are
go to auto zone and get the cherry bomb turbo muffler. its cheap and sounds good

@greeneco
well my friend owns the shop and will hook me up with a new muffler for $70 welded, I was just wondering what are my other options available (that's he'll also weld)
@red2.2cavi
by cherry bomb don't u mean glasspack, won't that sound bad on a 4 cyl
thanks guys for the replies
70 isnt bad at all. and from my experience a glass pack should only be used as a resonator if that.

w3rd. i have a glasspack on as my muffler right now and it sucks balls. i can't wait to finish collecting parts for my exhaust so i can just do a header back.

or just buy some 2.5 inch piping and a high flow cat and have ur firend weld it all together
just put on the cherry bomb turbo muffler and it sounds awesome
thrush chambered turbo style muffler shouldnt sound bad on a stock exhaust and you can get it in a 2 inch pipe and then just slip fit it onto the stock pipe, no welding required.

i have a flowmaster and it sounds good with stock pipes
Walker exhaust makes a line of mufflers called "quiet flow". They are better flowing than a stock muffler but quieter than a performance muffler. Might be the way to go if you want the best of both worlds. Im planning on swapping the flowmaster on my exhaust system for one soon. Ive got 2 1/4 cat back w magnaflow resonator and a flowmaster 50 series, it sounds ok, but Im tired of the noise level.

walker is a great muffler had one on my ranger good sound just not loud.
Walker is the one who makes the Dynomax Super Turbo... which even thirty years ago was the top-rated "turbo-style" muffler... so, of course, anything made by them will be good.
Go beyond the "bolt-on".
that muffler has a wastegate yo!

This would be excellent advice if you wish to be a rice boy and have your exhaust sound like @!#$.

dynamaxx also owns thrush (thus both are owned by walker), thrush is supposed to be dynamaxx's bargain brand.

If you want to be heard go with the ones mentioned. You want to hear your engine tone, go with this:

Some cars comes from the factory with this including the optional performance exhaust in the base Vettes and standard ZR1, Z06.
In theory it looks like you get to keep the best of both worlds. In practice with all the soot our cars spits out, I have a feeling that the flap will get stuck open or closed. As of now, I'm see it being a gimmick just because of reliability.

I also have a dynomax Turbo SS series on stock piping. It sounds very nice not rice. i picked up a summit racing rolled tip to put at the end of it.
Either go with a Magnaflow or other quality muffler or a nice catback exhaust.
