Hey all Im new to this site so here goes my first question! Last 2 years Ive raced my 95 Cavalier at my local cirlce track (asphalt 1/3 mi paved .... medium banking) and it worked fairly good!! Towards the end of the year last year the motor started missing and I suspected ignition problems (coil pack or something) and then the head gasket went so I swapped in another used motor this spring.... they are both 2.2's but even tho we won the points champ with it last year we never won any races ... won a couple the year before but mostly 2nd and 3rd places last year the car handles awesome and weve got tha pretty much set up as good as it will get for my class .... No jacking bolts or adjustable coilovers ect all we can do is heat and cut springs and add rubbers stock steel wheels no bigger than 15x6 and street tires no more than 60 series ... so this year the competition has goten stronger so Ive decided to upgrade completely ... I found a 96 z24 5speed (my other car is automatic) and I think that will give mt the boost that I need ...I can corner as well as all the other cars but in the straights they mostly all pull me ... a couple neons and a couple 2.3 mustangs and a prelude are my only real competition .... So my questions are this #1 I have read in another thread that Ill want to change the oil pump to one from a 2.3 and I know where there is one sitting in a 92 or 93 grand am or I may buy a new one if they arent too much $$ but can anyone point me in the right direction for instructions on making that swap ?? and second did the z24 have any differences in the suspension as far as struts or sway bars ect ? I havent gone to pick the new car up yet (its about 4 hours away) and we have a couple weeks off from racing so Im going to go get it next weekend and swap my roll cage seat and buckles ect to the new car and I was thinking that since the old car is all set up I may just swap my struts and springs ect from the old car unless the z24 has a better or different set up then I may just set the new one up all together ... any help would be appreciated ... also is there anything I can do to the new motor that will give me more power on a budget and while remaining stock appearing ?? Thats the other thing in my class we are SUPPOSED to have stock motor / trans as prodiced form the factory although the prelude and both the mustangs arent anywhere near stock (the prelude owners father owns a machine shop and he specializes in honda race engines so I know he isnt stock especially since the 86 prelude 2.0 si came with 110 HP stock and my 2.2 came with 120 and he pulls me so hard down the straights it makes me sick) so Im probably not going to beat him anyway unless he has some bad luck but Id still like to get as much power as possible ... I fooled the computer in my old 2.2 by making it think the temp sensor was always reading around 155 degrees so I know about that little trick (and no I didnt buy the crap on ebay for 20 bucks I went o radio shakc and bought a 25 cent resistor LOL ... thansk in advance for the help and now that Ive found this site Im sure Ill be back asking more questions ... someday Ill get some vids and pics fro mthe races and maybe take apic of all tyhe trophys Ive won with my little cavalier !! Im sure Id make all you cavalier junkies proud LOL ... oh and sorry for the spelling LOL
wholy @!#$, lay off the caffiene and form paragraphs.
wow that was hard to read
there is a write up on how to do the oil pump swap on quad4forums.com in their write up area....
as for the suspension, i'm pretty sure its different... i know when i bought my KYB struts, i had to specify if my car was a Z24 or not...
Ya well I was wondering if anyone knew for sure but I can wait till I go get the car to figure it out not a big deal as far as the suspension ... and I found some pics and more info after I made htis post so Ive pretty much figured it out ..... I couldnt figure out how to search on here till after I posted this and now I figured it out ...so Im all set with the oil pump change too .... any easy ways to gain power from the 2.4 ?? I also read something about swapping the cams from the 2.3 into the 2.4 too but will they all work ? The only 2.3 I know of in my area is the one in that 92 or 93 Grand am !
And as far as being hard to read ... ya I know!!
I spent all my time in shop class in HS not english class ... and that was 10+ years ago so the little bit I did learn ... well thats gone now !!
i for sure know how to do it... but its better explained in the sticky than i could tell you... the block will need to be drilled. holes tapped and plugged...
the sticky blu reffered to is for a mild cam upgrade... you can also go HO cams (.410 lift .212 dur) ... the exhaust w/ housing is bolt on (2.3 cams use bigger lifters), you'll have to use the 2.4 intake housing, and bore out the lifter holes to the bigger lifters, and modify the intake cam to terminate with a PS pump insert (since the 2.3 cam extends past the housing to a pully that turns the ps pump)... you'd also need to weld on the cam shaft position sensor pad... (and after running cams that don't have a cps pad, i would reccomend you do so.. the idle issues are not fun)
The suspension parts will swap. The Z24 had a front sway bat from the factory, and a make shift rear sway bar. Yo can swap your suspension parts from your current car to your new car.
You will want to forget about the resistor mod. It doesn't work. It could actually hurt you.
