2200sfi cam swap.
Sunday, September 12, 2010 5:02 PM
I realize there is a sticky thread on the cams but i didn't find what i was looking for. If i missed something i apologize, please don't just rip if i accidentally missed something.
I have a 2002 cavalier with a 2200sfi, only light mods at the moment, but i'm looking to get some more power out of it, header is soon to be on order but i'm wondering about a cam swap, but i don't know where i could get one, what it will cost me, if it will require to pull the motor, undo the mounts and jack it the motor up out of the car some, or leave it right in the car, and what kind of power i could be looking at (i realize different cams could vary)

This car is being used as a daily driver so i'm not looking for something too crazy, but if anyone could give me some information on this topic it would be greatly appreciated.
Thanks,
Adam

I believe you have to send a core to be reground, so you'll either have to be without your car while it has no cam, or you could send one from the junkyard. Some local companies may do it, but you might have to send a cam to someone.

Isn't JBP on the same list as IZN TRBL?

I know they are not the same company. Just asking if they were black-listed too.

From what I recall, they are.

ImpportPerformanceParts.net wants $324 for their cams. The grinds are actually okay. They call their cam cores billet cores, but are actually a cast steel core. If hardened properly they should be fine. I've only heard of a couple using them, they seem to be satisfied.

At $374(US), plus core charge of $194, JBP cams are way overpriced regrinds. I have some doubts about a company that won't give you their cam timing specs. It's not like they're dealing with someone in a pro race series. Regrinds can only more the centerline so much, before grinding through the hardening and the stockers can't be rehardened.

A regrind from you favorite cam company only cost $150 (typical) and only takes about a week to get done. Most will only want to do a single pattern cam (same intake and exhaust lobes). These are okay for many turbo applications, but N/A and Nitrous applications do better with dual pattern cams. You will be limited by how much lift can be ground into the base circle of the cam, very little movement of the lobe centers, the valve springs are lift and/or rpm limited and the pcm can only take some much change without tuning being needed (such as mine!)

There's alot power to be made with these little motors, with the right combination of parts. The research and work those of us who've been doing the leg work, is starting to show through.

If I were to have a more aggressive cam grind on a stock cam, how long would it last seeing as how it will prob be ground past the hardened spot of the cam? It will not be my daily driver but I will be driving the hell out of it.

If you have a reputable cam grinder, they won't grind past the hardening. That's why they will only grind so much off(increase the lift) and only move the lobe center one, maybe two degrees. When they do move the center-lines, they reduce the amount of lift you can get. Most of the material ground off comes from the base circle, not the higher stressed lobes.
