Well the 96' I bought in april has a 99' block with a 96' head.
The head rebuilt from when the block blew, and the 99' rebuilt from a Grand Am.
Is this going to change any numbers(IE compression) for the motor?
I thought I've read somewhere that the 96-97 and 98-99 motors were different somehow.

Yea you cant use a 96 head with a 99 block. The water jackets are different.

Im running a 97 head on my 01 block with no issues.
As David said the water jackets are different, but you'll be fine. You will also have a little bit more compression as an added bonus.

im using a 97 block with a 00 head... no issues here... besides having to heli-coil the knock sensor port on the block to accept the 00 sensor

Thats weird guys, I don't see how you guys are not having issues. I compared head gaskets on the blocks with the said years and was like nope, not doing that. But glad you guys arent having issues.

i've also got a 96-98 head on a '00 block. been running strong daily for what will be 2 months tomorrow, and around 2,500 miles.
definately a small boost in compression is had from this setup. flat top pistons in 99+ blocks and the 96-98 heads have a slightly shallower combustion chamber than the 99+.
the water jackets are a bit different, but i haven't had any leak issues thus far with using the 96-98 head gasket. good setup
Shiaat lol, I could of saved myself a lot of trouble if I went with my orginal setup lol
Did you guys modify your head gaskets or something?

lol dave nope man, it just swaps. im surprised you didnt know that. now paul is the opposite, 99+ on a 97 block. im doing a 97 head on an 00 block right now...
OP- go with it man, its a good setup. not much of a compression bump but its a little bit. every bit counts.

Well I've had no issues thus far.
Good to hear that other people have similar set ups with no issues.

yeah, i have high comp race pistons in my 97 block
i didnt modify the gasket at all. i'm pretty sure all that needs to be done is to use the matching gasket for the head. like 96-98 head gets a 96-98 gasket and a 99+ head gets a 99+ gasket. at least that's the way i understood it when i ordered my gaskets, and i haven't had any issues yet, lol (knock on wood).
Im pretty sure my gasket matches my block. The car has run flawlessly temperature wise for several months.
I think most people use the same gasket that matches the head.
